Monster Hunter Wilds: Best Skills for Defense
The following are considered some of the best defense-oriented skills:
- Defense Boost
- Constitution
- Guard
- Heroics
- Self-Improvement

1) Defense Boost
Starting with Defense Boost, a skill tailored for defensive situations. The skill increases the defense stat, as its name suggests, and has seven different levels. While the initial levels provide a flat defense increase, the higher levels offer additional bonuses, including elemental resistances. At level 7, you will receive a 10% defense and +35 bonus boost, along with +5 resistance to all elements.
2) Constitution
Stamina is essential in Monster Hunter Wilds, not only for offensive actions like executing combos or activating Demon Mode with Dual Blades but also for defensive maneuvers like evading or sprinting. Since certain weapon types lack guarding or blocking abilities, dodging is your only option to avoid incoming damage.
The Constitution skill reduces stamina depletion when evading, blocking, or performing certain actions. The skill has 5 Levels, with Level 1 reducing the stamina depletion by 10%. The stat boost increases for the subsequent levels and caps at 50% at Level 5.
3) Guard
Guarding is a crucial aspect when fighting formidable monsters that allows you to block incoming monster attacks. However, it decreases your weapon sharpness and consumes stamina. Not all weapons allow guarding, so if you are maining a weapon capable of guarding, like Great Sword or Sword and Shield, the Guard skill can greatly enhance your defense.
The Guard skill reduces stamina depletion when guarding while also reducing the knockbacks. The skill has three levels, and the Level 3 Guard can greatly reduce the attack impact and reduce the stamina depletion by 50%. For an even stronger defense, you can also equip the ‘Guard Up’ skill, which enables the ability to block normally unblockable attacks.

4) Heroics
The Heroics is a life-saving skill that boosts defense as well as attack power when you have low health. Heroics activates when your HP falls below 35% or lower and significantly increases the attack and defense power. The skill comes with five different levels, with the effect increasing for subsequent levels. The skill allows you to fight back in dire situations, where the enhanced stats help to prevent potential fainting.
5) Self-Improvement
Self-Improvement is a unique defense skill that boosts the attack and defense during a quest. The skill takes effect only when you start a quest, increasing the stats as time passes during the quest and caps at 30 minutes. The skill provides a boost during the 5, 10, 20, and 30-minute mark of the quest.
You will receive a +4 attack (except 5 min-mark) and +5 defense for every time-mark. Overall, the skill boosts +20 defense and +12 attack. Albeit primarily a defensive skill, it offers a solid attack increase, making it one of the best skills for long battles.
