  • Class: Mage
  • Race: Breton
    • Systres Origin
  • Birthsign: The Mage
  • Major Attributes: Intelligence, Willpower, Endurance
  • Major Skills: Destruction, Conjuration, Illusion, and Alteration

Skills and Attributes

Choosing the Mage class will place most magical schools in major skills, which will then gain experience quickly. Feel free to create a custom class to swap out any major skills you deem unnecessary.

The Breton class and Mage birth sign allow for increased Magicka at the start of the game without any associated drawbacks. Upon leveling up, focus on allocating points into Intelligence to increase total Magicka, Willpower to improve Magicka regeneration, and Endurance to add to maximum health.

Equipment

After completing the tutorial, start the Mages Guild quests to level up skills, buy spells, and gain access to spell crafting and enchanting. Use a staff to cast spells for times when you run out of Magicka. Keep a melee weapon handy and level its respective skill, such as Blade for daggers and swords, and Blunt for maces and war axes.

Your focus in combat will be to avoid taking melee damage and to use Alteration spells with Shield effects to reduce incoming damage. This is important since wearing light or heavy armor will reduce spell effectiveness.

Instead, take regular clothes or robes, and enchant them with Shield to get even better protection than regular armor. You can do so at an Altar of Enchanting found at the Arcane University and Frostcrag Spire. Additionally, equip an enchanted shield alongside a two-handed weapon like a staff to benefit from its enchantment without incurring a spell effectiveness penalty.

Spells

Destruction gives access to fire, frost, and shock elemental damage spells alongside health damaging offensive spells. Use at least two of these in combination with their respective weakness spells to deal heavy damage to enemies.

Use the Altar of Spellmaking in the Arcane University or Frostcrag Spire to add a one-second Paralysis effect to your regular offensive spells. This will cause most targets to fall over and waste time getting up, allowing you to maintain distance.

Cast Conjuration spells regularly to keep a summon tanking hits for you on the frontline. This will give you enough breathing room to cast a chain of synergizing spells, such as Weakness to Fire followed by Heat Blast.
