Esquie Underwater Guide for Clair Obscur Expedition 33: How To Unlock the Ability
You’ll need to progress far enough into the game to unlock Esquie, who’ll join you at Camp. You can interact with them there, but Esquie’s underwater abilities do not unlock immediately. In fact, you’ll need to make quite a bit of further progress in the game before you have the option of unlocking this particular ability. Here are the steps to follow to finally unlock the underwater ability.
- Step 1: Complete Act 2 of the game.
- Step 2: Build your relation with Esquie to Relationship Level 5. You can do this by spending time with Esquie whenever you get that option back at Camp.
- Step 3: At this Relationship Level, listen to Esquie as he tells you how he misses Urrie, one of his dearest rocks. He’ll ask you to retrieve Urrie from Francois’ Cave. If you agree, you’ll be teleported to the caves.
- Step 4: You’ll try to trade Urrie with Francois, but the latter will refuse and attack you. You’ll need to win this fight one-on-one with Francois, which shouldn’t be too difficult.
- Step 5: After the fight ends, retrieve Urrie from Francois and deliver it to Esquie back at Camp.
This will deepen your bond with Esquie to Relationship Level 6. You’ll also unlock the underwater diving ability.

Once the underwater diving ability unlocks, you’ll be able to access the blue shiny vortexes inside water bodies across the game world. Diving will help you retrieve special items from the vortexes, including Colour of Lumina. Unlocking this ability will also allow you to earn the Plane, Train, and Submarine achievement/trophy in the game. You earn it when you manage to unlock all of Esquie’s abilities.
