As you progress through Clair Obscur Expedition 33’s heart-wrenching story, Verso will begin to develop deep relationships with all of his traveling companions. Interacting and spending time with them at camp will open up new relationship levels for everyone, giving you access to their more powerful abilities.

Reaching the highest relationship level with every companion is pretty straightforward, except for Maelle. Going from Relationship Level 6 to 7 with her will require Verso to answer one of her questions either truthfully or lie to her. Depending on your dialogue choice, you may or may not be able to ever unlock the highest bond with her.

In this guide, we’ll explain what question she poses to Verso and why you should be honest with Maelle in Clair Obscur Expedition 33.

What Does Maelle Ask Verso?

After you unlock Relationship Level 6 with Maelle, the next time you spend time with her at camp, she’ll pose a difficult question to Verso. She’ll inquire whether Verso could have saved Gustave from Renoir when the latter ambushed them at the end of Act 1. Given what the expeditioners have learned since then, it’s possible that Maelle already knows the answer to the question but wants to hear it from Verso. The question could have been a way to see whether Verso trusts her and is ready to admit the truth to her, even though it’s difficult.

As soon as she poses the question, you’ll get the option to answer honestly or lie to her. Lying to her would mean Verso stating that he couldn’t have protected Gustave from Renoir. Maelle will see through this deception almost immediately and won’t want to talk to you any further.

Why Should You Be Honest With Maelle in Clair Obscur Expedition 33?

Telling Maelle the truth that Verso could have saved Gustave that day is the best recourse here. Verso will explain how he was unsure whether Maelle would have helped him had Gustave not perished. While Maelle is upset at hearing this at first, she does realize Verso’s point of view, especially knowing what they know now about the Canvas and the Paintress. The emotional dialogue ends with Verso and Maelle vandalizing the Paintress’ Tower and leaving a message for Renoir.

At the same time, being honest with Maelle is the only way to unlock the max relationship level with her. Reaching this status also unlocks her final and most powerful gradient ability, Gommage. With it, she can kill weaker targets outright and cause massive Void damage to other types of enemies. If you decide to lie to her, you’ll be forever locked out of this specific skill for Maelle.
