Death Stranding is an action-adventure game from Kojima Productions. It’s a game set in a post-apocalyptic United States where you play as a porter trying to connect isolated communities.

The game is mostly known for its memes featuring the protagonist, played by Norman Reedus, carrying a baby. This gave rise to some funny memes made by the community, like “Norman Reedus and the Funky Fetus.” Memes aside, the game actually has an interesting storyline and well-developed characters. However, outside the community, people are mostly familiar with its cargo delivery gameplay, calling the game an Uber simulator.

Now, with Death Stranding 2 on the horizon, let’s take a refresher and discuss the first game’s plot recap, major characters, and crucial story points. I’ll try not to reveal information that could be a major spoiler.

Death Stranding Plot Overview

The game takes place in a fictional future where Earth has been ravaged by catastrophic explosions leading to a phenomenon known as the Death Stranding. This event resulted in the boundary between the living and the dead blurring. Additionally, otherworldly entities known as BTs have also started appearing, threatening the existence of humanity. As a result, survivors have taken refuge in isolated colonies, separated from each other.

This is where you, the main protagonist, named Sam Porter Bridges, come in. You will be playing the character of the “bridge” that unites these isolated colonies by offering a communications system named the Chiral Network. Along the way, you will discover more about Death Stranding and how the main character is connected to it.

Key Story Points

• The Death Stranding Event: A cataclysmic event that brought together the worlds of the living and the dead. This also resulted in a Timefall—rain that hastens the aging process—and the manifestation of BTs.
• Bridge Babies (BBs): Babies delivered from brain-dead mothers, utilized by porters such as Sam to detect BTs. Sam’s BB, whom he lovingly refers to as Lou, becomes a very important companion along the way.
• Chiral Network: An infrastructure aimed at reconnecting disjoined communities to enable communication and sharing of resources, representing the re-establishment of social connections.
• Extinction Entity: An entity that can cause mass extinction. The game delves into the idea of whether or not such an entity is behind the ongoing apocalypse.
• Sam’s Personal Journey: Aside from his mission, Sam also faces his own fears, traumas, and relationships, especially his relationship with Amelie and the revelations regarding his past.

Main Characters of Death Stranding

Here is a quick dive into the characters with major roles in the story of Death Stranding:

• Sam Porter Bridges: The main protagonist, an exceptional porter who works in the company Bridges. Responsible for reconnecting disjoined cities and communities, Sam has special traits that help him detect and evade spectral humanoids referred to as BTs.
• Amelie: The daughter of the past United States President and a key character in the unification mission of the country. She is an important character in the main story, with her real personality and motives slowly revealed throughout the game.
• Die-Hardman: The Bridges commander, responsible for Sam’s operations and advice. His background and relationship with the other characters enhance the narrative development.
• Fragile: Another courier, Fragile helps Sam in his quest. She possesses a personal score against Higgs, one of the main villains.
• Higgs Monaghan: The primary villain and the “Man in the Golden Mask.” Heading the terrorist faction Homo Demens, Higgs aims to bring about a greater acceleration of the extinction of man through control over the Death Stranding phenomenon.
• Cliff Unger: A mysterious individual who appears in flashbacks and dream sequences. His relationship with Sam and, in turn, the global events of Death Stranding, gradually unfold as you play the game.
• Deadman: One of the Bridges scientists who helps Sam by giving him facts regarding the Bridge Babies (BBs) and the BTs.
• Heartman: Yet another Bridges scientist with a rare condition where his heart freezes for 21 minutes, resulting in short periods spent in the afterlife. He studies the Death Stranding in order to reconnect with his missing family.
• Mama: A Bridges technician bonded to her deceased infant daughter, imprisoning her within a Bridges compound.

What Is the Release Date of Death Stranding 2

Death Stranding 2 will soon arrive on June 26, 2025. The game is a PlayStation 5 exclusive and will not be available on other platforms on the release date. However, that doesn’t mean it will stay a PS5-exclusive game in the future. Many games eventually make their way to other platforms after a few years. That said, Kojima Productions has yet to confirm whether this title will expand beyond the PS5.
