How to Get Prodigal Return in Destiny

To get Prodigal Return in Destiny 2, players will need to own Season of Defiance and complete the “Awaken, Queensguard” mission. This will open up the Seasonal Playlist, Defiant Battlegrounds, which drops all of the Season of Defiance weapons including Prodigal Return. Defiant Battlegrounds have a chance to drop Prodigal Return or another Defiant weapon or Armor Piece. You can use a Defiant Key to also get a Resonant version of Defiant weapons as well. The Defiant Battlegrounds playlist is found on the HELM.

You can also focus your Defiant Engrams that you earn at the War Table Found in the HELM as well if you have the Defiant Weapon Focusing War Table Upgrade. It cost 4 Defiant Engrams and 3000 Glimmer to do this.

In order to get more Deepsight Resonant Weapons quickly in order to craft, you should pick the following War Table upgrades when available: Defiant Weapon Focusing, Deepsight Decoding, and Queensguard’s Arsenal.

PvE – Prodigal Return God Roll

The following list presents Destiny 2 Prodigal Return God Roll for PvE

Launcher BarrelSmart Drift Control
MagazineDisorienting Grenades
Perk 1Enhanced Envious Assassin
Perk 2Enhanced Disruption Break
Origin TraitNoble Deeds
MasterworkHandling
ModQuick Access Sling

Launcher Barrel: Of all the perks that don’t really matter, the barrel of special grenade launchers for PvE is one of the most guilty. Special Grenade Launchers are mostly used as support to disorient enemies in higher level content and honestly the barrels don’t do much for that. The best choice is Smart Drift Control for all the passive benefits to basically every stat. Linear Compensator or Quick Launch also works great. But again its not that important of a choice.

Magazine: Special Grenade Launchers (that aren’t Wave Frames) are almost all exclusively used as debuff weapons is higher level content. Disorienting Grenades is the best choice to go with here as any combatant caught in the explosion of the grenade will be disoriented, keeping them from engaging you and making it really easy for you to engage them. This is a particularly popular tactic in high level nightfalls, and will probably become more popular with the Nightfall changes that came with Lightfall.

Column 3 Perk: The best choice to have on most special Grenade Launchers is Auto-Loading Holster, but sadly this poor guy doesn’t get that perk. Instead we are opting for Envious Assassin which should overload the Magazine while we aren’t using it. Not the perfect solution, but it should work.

Column 4 Perk: Feeding into that whole this is a support weapon, Disruption Break will make it all the more useful against shielded enemies as well. Breaking an enemies shield should both disrupt them and disorient everyone around them if you have Disorienting Grenades. If you wanted to go a more direct damage route you could go with Voltshot instead.

Origin: No choice here. There is only one trait. A fun little passive benefit.

Masterwork: We want to hop swap to this weapon often, and a Handling Masterwork will get it out faster. This is also one of the rare times when a Reload Speed masterwork might come in handy since we can’t get Auto-Loading Holster on this Launcher.

Mod: Quick Access Sling will help us get this out quickly, allowing us to quickly swap to and from this weapon. This will allow us to pull it out, fire it off and disorient our enemies, then swap back to our primary or heavy weapon to clean things up.

Conclusion: The Prodigal Return has some decent potential having Disorienting Grenades and Disruption Break, but the lack of Auto-Loading Holster does hurt it slightly. Time will tell if this weapon can shine. It is nice to have a special Grenade Launcher with Disorienting Grenades to be craftable.

PvP – Prodigal Return God Roll

The following list presents Destiny 2 Prodigal Return God Roll for PvP

Launcher BarrelQuick Launch
MagazineProximity Grenades
Perk 1Enhanced Threat Detector
Perk 2Enhanced Harmony
Origin TraitNoble Deeds
MasterworkHandling
ModQuick Access Sling

Launcher Barrel: Interestingly, the perk here again doesn’t matter as much. Quick Launch is probably the best choice, but anything here will do.

Magazine: Here is where things get interesting. You could opt to go with Spike Grenades to get a nice one shot kill against another guardian on direct hit, but there is potential with a fun perk combo. And to that end we are going with Proximity Grenades.

Column 3 Perk: Another Column without very many interesting choices, we went with Threat Detector as it just seemed like the most not bad option.

Column 4 Perk: Now the fun begins. Harmony. When this is active, even Proximity Grenades have the capacity to take out T10 Guardians in one shot. This could have a really fun kill and swap playstyle with it. This will need to be tested, but the hype is real.

Origin: No choice here. There is only one trait. A fun little passive benefit.

Masterwork: Again this is a quick swap weapon, so Handling all the way.

Mod: The redundancy of what works with this gun is starting to get out of hand. Again we are going with Quick Access Sling to allow for faster swap speeds.

Conclusion: This weapon looked really unappealing for PvP at first. But as we dug into the perks we saw a fun little bit of potential. The combination of Proximity Grenades and Harmony looks fantastic on paper. Let’s see if works good in practice.
