Larian Studios and Baldur’s Gate Series are known for intriguing, well-written characters and games that offer multiple choices. This is a perfect setup to take it a little further, and in BG3, just like previous Larian Studios Titles, relationships are a big and essential part of the player’s experience.

Companions, Enemies, and Romances in Baldur’s Gate 3

Players can develop relationships with companions and some NPCs in Baldur’s Gate 3. The game takes romances and developing relationships further than a simple “gift system”, where it’s enough to shower NPC with gifs their like to get their approval. In Baldur’s Gate 3, companions will react or comment on your decisions during the dialogues with them or other NPC. They also judge your game’s choices, and all are aggregated into an “approval system“. Companions can approve or disapprove of your decisions, and you’ll get points. If you develop enough, it can even lead to a fantastic, well-written romance or developing an enemy.

Companions and Romances in Early Access

Baldur's Gate 3 Romance - Shadowheart
Shadowheart Romance

In Baldur’s Gate 3 Early Acces, you can only play through the first act, which is not enough to develop a romance or enemy status with your companions. However, this feature was officially confirmed by Larian Studios and will be entirely available at full release on August 3rd, 2023.

In Early Acces, five companions can join you during your travels, Astarion, Gale, Lae’zel, Shadowheart, and Wyll. Each companion has a different class, personality, and background, and you’ll need to earn their trust before they reveal more about themselves. One of the best places to talk and discover more about each companion is camp. Interact with them often, and you won’t be disappointed.

A special place deserves Minthara, she is a one-night romance option if players decide to betray the druid grove and let goblins murder tieflings and the village. In Early Access, she is the only Romacable option outside of the player’s party. However, it’s possible that at full release, there will be more NPCs like her.
