Find out which is the better upgrade choice between Blast and Smelt for the Combat Shotgun in Doom The Dark Ages.

Doom The Dark Ages introduces many new weapons, but it also brings back many of the weapons that are favorites for series veterans. One of these is the Combat Shotgun. This trusty weapon can help you clear waves of enemies at close range, causing havoc on the battlefield. However, you can improve each weapon in the latest game through three upgrade tiers.
These upgrades can sometimes unlock brand-new abilities for these weapons, making them even stronger and more useful. However, players have to make a choice between two upgrades at both Tier 2 and Tier 3. In this guide, we’ll explore the Tier 2 upgrade choices, Smelt and Blast, for the Combat Shotgun in Doom The Dark Ages to understand which one is better.
What Is the Smelt Upgrade for the Combat Shotgun in Doom The Dark Ages?

The first upgrade option you get at tier 2 of the weapon is Smelt. To activate it, you’ll need to have unlocked the Incendiary mod first. Also, the Smelt upgrade costs 125x Gold. With Incendiary, your Combat Shotgun causes the Burn effect on enemies. Smelt takes this a step further, allowing you to reap the benefits every time you inflict the Burn ailment on monsters using the weapon. All burned enemies will drop more armor pickups if you choose Smelt as the second-tier upgrade.
Basically, you can more easily recover your armor during combat encounters with this upgrade installed.

What Is the Blast Upgrade for the Combat Shotgun in Doom The Dark Ages?

Blast is the second Tier 2 upgrade option available to you for the Combat Shotgun. It costs the same as Smelt, 125x Gold. If you pick the Blast upgrade, all enemies that are affected by the Burn status will explode upon dying. This explosion can be a great way for crowd control, causing significant damage to demons nearby. Since you’ll be facing large waves of enemies almost regularly, the Blast upgrade will help you clear up those foes quicker.

Which Upgrade Should You Choose?
While both of the upgrades have their own benefits, you can unfortunately choose only one. We’d suggest picking up the Blast upgrade since it introduces the enemy explosion ability for the Combat Shotgun. The effect has much more of an impact on combat encounters than simply having access to more armor pickups. Also, Smelt just slightly upgrades the Incendiary effect, while Blast unlocks a brand-new mechanic for the weapon.
