Throughout the game, you’ll be meeting companions and making decisions that can have direct consequences for the world around you. Furthermore, the choices you make regarding initially race, class, and faction can impact your ability to influence and persuade others. In this character creation guide for Dragon Age: The Veilguard we will go over all of the options you’ll get to choose from as you make your avatar.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Character Creation Explained

In Dragon Age: The Veilguard your character is known as ‘Rook’, and they will join a small group of companions trying to stop a ritual being performed by Solas. The consequences of this action are unexpected, however, and Rook will be dragged into a deeper and more dangerous conflict. Character creation in Dragon Age: The Veilguard is partially about creating a cool character with a playstyle you enjoy. But in the Dragon Age series, certain choices go deeper than just the aesthetics. Race, class, and faction will change your available dialogue options when speaking to companions and certain NPCs. This can affect your journey to gather allies and influence groups.

These are all of the main character creation choices in Dragon Age: The Veilguard:

  • Race (Lineage)
  • Appearance
  • Class
  • Faction (Background)
  • Playstyle (Difficulty)
  • Import Saves and/or Character

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Character Creation Races

Character Creation - Dragon Age the Veilguard

The first decision you will make in the Dragon Age: The Veilguard character creation is choosing which of the four playable races you wish to be. Your choices are Elf, Qunari, Human, and Dwarf. In Dragon Age lore, Elves are a formerly conquered people looking to the past in hopes of a better future. The Qunari are a physically robust people, most of whom follow a strict cultural code. Humans are the most numerous race in Thedas, and their current civilizations are very prosperous. Dwarves cannot wield magic at all but have a unique bond with the earth and its metals.

Your choice of race in Dragon Age: The Veilguard will primarily be based on two things. First, your personal preference of looks. And secondly, how you want to experience the world of Thedas on your journey. The developers at BioWare have confirmed that race will play a major role in dialogue trees and dialogue choices. Certain conversations with influential NPCs may turn in a different direction depending on the race of the character speaking to them.

Furthermore, at this time it does not appear that your choice of race will apply any type of stat boost to your Rook. In previous Dragon Age games, each race provided a unique stat boost that would increase strength, magic, or resistances. However, in The Veilguard your choice of race will be almost entirely roleplay dependent.

Following your choice of race, the character creator will move on to a screen where you can select from several body type presets. However, there is a lot more personalization options that you can choose from beyond that. After picking a starting preset, click on the Customize button on the right and it will take you to a new menu screen. This will show you all of the main categories were you can make further adjustments.

Head, Body, Eyes, Nose, Mouth, Ears, Hair, Makeup, and Tattoos/Scars are all available. Moreover, each will have its own separate subcategories where you can make additional changes. There are many sliders for making minor tweaks to face shape and body size. An exciting inclusion is over 80 hairstyles for elves, humans, and dwarves. Furthermore, there are over 20 hairstyles for the Qunari, along with a lot of options for their horns.

Even though your character’s personal appearance won’t change any of the gameplay or dialogue options, this is often where players spend the most time getting their character to look ‘just right’.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard will follow previous games in the series and have three classes for you to choose from: Warrior, Rogue, and Mage. Your choice of class will greatly depend on your personal playstyle preference. Warriors have high survivability and protect the group while dealing damage. Rogues have great burst damage and mobility. Mages can cast powerful damage spells and heal the group but are typically the most vulnerable to attack.

Furthermore, as you progress your character and fill in your skill tree by using skill points, additional options will become available. Each class in The Veilguard has three potential Class Specializations. You won’t yet be choosing class specializations in the character creator, but it’s important to know which one you are aiming for at the beginning.

The fourth choice you will be making in the Dragon Age: The Veilguard character creator is about which faction you want to ally with. The faction choices serve as your background in the game. It will also determine how you met Varric and how you came to be drawn into the main story conflict.

Furthermore, your alignment with your chosen faction will also grant you three unique buffs. The first will buff your ability to gain reputation with your chosen faction. The second two buffs are specific to each faction but can include utility buffs like the ability to carry an extra potion. Additionally, each class specialization is associated with a certain faction. However, you do not have to be part of a faction in order to use their class specialization.

Finally, each of these factions has its own style of armor, which also adjusts a bit in look for each class. These armors you see in the character creator won’t be immediately available to you. Rather, they are shown as ‘Aspirational Armor’ so you can preview what your character will look like in each distinct style.

The Playstyle section of the character creator in Dragon Age: The Veilguard is where you will set the level of difficulty you wish to play on. Each of these difficulty levels is represented by a tarot card, and on the right you will be able to see specifics about the degree of challenges you will face. As you increase the difficulty, Incoming Damage, Enemy Aggression, Tactical Challenge, and Defend Timing will all escalate.

Here are all of the levels of difficulty settings offered by Dragon Age: The Veilguard from easiest to hardest:

  • Storyteller
  • Keeper
  • Adventurer
  • Underdog
  • Nightmare
  • Unbound (Customized)

Currently, there do not appear to be any achievements linked to the level of difficulty you play on. However, this may change with the full release of the game.

Finally, you can change your difficulty setting at any time during the game if you need more of a challenge or if gameplay has become too frustrating. However, the exception to this rule is the highest level of difficulty. If you select Nightmare mode in character creation, then you will not be able to change it later on.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Importing Saves

The Dragon Age series has always stressed player choice and how it can shape and change the world around them. Consequently, in past titles, players of previous games have been able to import saves into a new game. This was an effective way for players to see the world as they created it rather than the developers imposing a standard ‘canon’ across the board.

However, after three large-scale games, this system has become increasingly complex. For better or worse, an overwhelming number of choices from Dragon Age: Origins through Inquisition has caused the developers to streamline the process for this fourth entry.

Therefore, in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, you will only have a limited selection of major choices from Inquisition that will be ‘imported’ into the game. This process has been integrated into the character creation process. Instead of importing a file, you will get to recreate your Inquisitor character using the same Appearance options. Additionally, you will be asked to select an answer to three major story choices made during Inquisition.

For players who may have forgotten the story from that game, or for anyone brand new, this process will also offer a refresher on the story. However, going through the story is an option, so feel free to make your choices if you already know them.
