In this guide, we explore the antagonists of Dragon Age: The Veilguard and introduce the most evil characters Thedas has ever known.
All these years after the Inquisition, players thought that the main antagonist of Dragon Age: The Veilguard would be Solas. At the end of Trespasser, Solas, the Dread Wolf, revealed his plan to tear down the Veil. He created the Veil to trap the evil elven gods; destroying it will also annihilate the world. Solas believes this sacrifice is necessary. He already did something similar once when he created the Veil. Despite his good intentions, his plan leads to everyone’s death and the world’s end. But not everything turned out as we had thought.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard – Evil Characters and Antagonists
However, the surprise came when we saw Varrick and Scout Harding, well-known characters from previous games, alongside the new Dragon Age: The Veilguard protagonist trying to stop Solas. In the gameplay reveal, Rook tries to stop Solas’ ritual to tear down the Veil by destroying statues used in the ritual. In fact, Solas was transferring Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain from their failing prison to a new one when the party disrupted the ritual, causing Solas to lose control. As a result, two figures rise in front of Solas, looking exactly like the ancient elven gods depicted in old mosaics and symbols.
These gods are Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain, and they are not friendly. According to Dragon Age lore and what we learned from Solas in the Dragon Age Inquisition, these ancient elven gods are pure evil. Consequently, in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the main antagonists are accidentally released evil gods, the Evanuris. Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain are unhappy about being trapped behind the Veil for all those years. They are also likely furious with Solas, who is responsible for their prison.
This raises the question: will Solas, previously expected to be the main antagonist, now join the resistance against these evil gods? As a result, players can expect a significant threat from these ancient gods, making them the main focus of the resistance in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
The Elven Gods – Evanuris
Released Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain are some of the most evil gods in the elven pantheon. They will undoubtedly bring disaster to Thedas as they seek revenge and domination after being trapped for so long. They remember a different world, where they had slaves and were worshiped. The current state of Thedas is most likely unfamiliar to them, and just like Solas, they may seek to bring “their old elven world.” Except while Solas had a plan to “destroy the world,” he constantly claimed he would do it in the most gentle way possible. He definitely never was cruel, which we can’t say about other Evanuris. Will Elgar’nan and Ghilan’nain be the only evil characters and main antagonists of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, or will they try to release others?
Evanuris, The Elven Pantheon includes:
- Elgar’nan: God of Vengeance
- Mythal: the Great Protector
- Falon’Din: Friend of the Dead, the Guide
- Dirthamen: Keeper of Secrets
- Andruil: Goddess of the Hunt
- Sylaise: the Hearthkeeper
- June: God of the Craft
- Ghilan’nain: Mother of the Halla
- Fen’Harel: The Dread Wolf
- The Forgotten Ones*
*Geldauran, Daern’thal, and Anaris are known as the Forgotten Ones – in elven mythology, they are considered the “evil gods.” We have little information about them. However, now we know that all elven gods were, in fact, pure evil characters, so the true nature of the Forgotten Ones remains a mystery, and it’s likely that it’s not so simple.
Fen’Harel: The Dread Wolf (Solas)
- Gender: Male
- Race: Elf
- Titles: The Dread Wolf, Trickster (Dalish Beliefs), The Rebel God (The Temple of Mythal)
- Family: Mythal calls Solas an “old friend,” but the exact connection is unknown.
Solas, also known as the Dread Wolf and the Trickster, was a key figure in ancient elven history. He is one of the Evanuris, a group of powerful elven gods. In the ancient elven world, Solas was a rebel who opposed the tyranny of the other Evanuris. He led a rebellion against them, fighting for the freedom of the elven slaves who were oppressed by the cruel and power-hungry gods.
Solas created the Veil, a magical barrier, to trap the Evanuris and end their reign of terror. This act, however, came at a great cost, as it severed the elven connection to the Fade and drastically changed the world. Despite his noble intentions, Solas’s actions led to the destruction of the elven civilization and the rise of the modern world as we know it.
Solas seeks to tear down the Veil he created, believing it is the only way to restore the elven people and correct the past mistakes. This plan, however, threatens to bring catastrophic consequences, making him a complex and controversial figure. While he believes he is fighting for a just cause, his methods could lead to the destruction of the world, setting him as both a potential ally and a dangerous antagonist in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Elgar’nan
- Gender: Male
- Race: Elf
- Titles: All-Father, Eldest of the Sun, He Who Overthrew His Father, God of Fatherhood, God of Vengeance
- Family: Mythal (wife)
Elgar’nan, also known as the All-Father, god of fatherhood, sun, and vengeance, is one of the most feared elven gods. He is considered one of the pantheon’s most powerful and ruthless gods. Elgar’nan is known for his destructive power and role in punishing those who defy him. Ancient elves would not call on Elgar’nan to deliver justice because his rage and vengeance are legendary. Now that he is free, Elgar’nan might unleash wrath on Thedas, causing chaos and destruction.
Ghilan’nain
- Gender: Female
- Race: Elf
- Titles: Mother of the Halla
- Family: It’s hinted that Andruil and Ghilan’nain were somehow connected as lovers or friends.
Ghilan’nain, known as the Mother of Halla, was once a mortal who became a goddess. Dalish elves often depict her as gentle and nurturing, but her true, darker side is terrifying. According to an inscription in the Temple of Mythal, she created giants, monsters, and beasts that roamed the skies, waters, and lands. Her creations were formidable and terrifying, embodying her power and ambition.
When the goddess Andruil approached Ghilan’nain with an offer for apotheosis, Ghilan’nain demonstrated her heartless disposition. To seize the opportunity for godhood, she slaughtered her own creations in a span of three days. This mass killing showcased her readiness to destroy her own work and life forms for power. She spared only a few creatures: the “monsters of air” as a gift to Andruil, some deep-sea beings, and the halla, the sacred deer-like creatures revered by the elves. Also, this act of destruction and her willingness to eradicate life for her gain marked her as one of the most evil among the elven gods.
Now that she is free, Ghilan’nain can use her powers to manipulate and control, creating fear and distrust among the people of Thedas.
