Dragon Age: The Veilguard vs Dragon’s Dogma 2: Which Is a Better Action RPG

Both Dragon Age: The Veilguard and Dragon’s Dogma 2 place great emphasis on combat, but which one offers a better player experience?

Dragon Age: The Vielguard is now out and is Bioware’s return to form, something several fans and critics alike agree upon. The game follows up on the story of Dragon Age: Inquisition and once again brings players to Thedas. The Veilguard does everything you expect from a Dragon Age game but has, for the first time, put a stronger emphasis on combat. While always serviceable, Dragon Age has never impressed the players with its combat, something The Veilguard hopes to change.

Action is now more prominent than ever in Dragon Age, and this has brought up comparisons with Dragon’s Dogma 2, another action RPG that won critics over earlier in 2024.

Despite the similarity of the themes of dragons, the two games emphasize very different aspects. The Veilguard focuses on the narrative and player choice, while Dragon’s Dogman 2 prioritizes mechanical skill and gameplay. Regardless, their action gameplay and combat bring the need for comparison. Dragon Age: The Veilguard or Dragon’s Dogma 2, which is the better action RPG? We believe it is Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Why We Think Dragon Age: The Veilguard Is Better

1) A Living, Breathing World

Dragon Age’s strongest suit, ever since its debut, has been the living, breathing world of Thedas. The world is rich in culture, history, and lore, making it feel like a real place. This adds to your experience in combat, as it helps contextualize all the areas you fight in instead of moving you from arena to arena. Dragon’s Dogma does feature a beautiful world with memorable locations, but these feel more like singled-off zones rather than a well-built world.

2) The Story Adds To The Experience

Similar to the point above, the Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s narrative drives you from scenario to scenario, from fight to fight. The battles you partake in all have high stakes and lasting impacts on the narrative and the world. These high stakes add to the adrenaline rush of each fight and make for a stronger experience. While Dragon’s Dogma attempts to do the same, it rarely does so at the level of Dragon Age.

3) A More Accessible Experience

In addition to offering a solid combat experience, Dragon Age: The Veilguard also lets you mold it further and beyond through its accessibility settings. These settings allow you to adjust enemy health, enemy aggression, their resistances, combat timings, and more. You can lower or raise the difficulty to your liking, offering the perfect combat experience. While Dragon’s Dogma 2 also features accessibility options, they are nowhere near as in-depth as The Veilguard’s.
