Electronic Arts, a titan in the gaming world, recently stumbled, with EA Sports FC 25 not making the expected splash. Instead of scoring big, this mainstay of virtual soccer dribbled into disappointment, prompting EA to rethink its fiscal playbook for 2025. Alongside, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, despite critical applause, played to fewer crowds than anticipated.

This one-two punch has led EA to dial back its revenue goals, from hopeful growth to a reluctant retreat. It’s not all gloom, though—EA’s CEO remains upbeat, eyeing a comeback.

What Went Wrong with EAFC 25 sales?

EA has officially revised its revenue projections for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, and the news isn’t great. The gaming giant now expects net bookings to range between $7 and $7.15 billion, a sharp drop from earlier estimates. The primary reason? Slow sales and waning momentum for EA Sports FC 25, its flagship football game. Released in September, the title struggled to keep players engaged, which significantly impacted EA’s live services revenue.

Adding to the disappointment, Dragon Age: The Veilguard—BioWare’s much-anticipated RPG—didn’t deliver the numbers EA had hoped for. While critics praised its narrative depth and charm, it attracted only 1.5 million players during its launch quarter. This figure fell nearly 50% short of the company’s expectations, adding to the financial shortfall.

EA’s CEO, Andrew Wilson, acknowledged these challenges in a recent statement. While expressing confidence in the company’s long-term strategy, he admitted that both games “underperformed our net bookings expectations.” However, Wilson stressed that EA remains focused on delivering future growth, expecting a rebound in fiscal year 2026.

Despite these setbacks, EAFC 25 and Dragon Age: The Veilguard still show some promise. The football game maintains a loyal fan base, and its live services continue generating steady revenue. Meanwhile, The Veilguard received glowing reviews, with Eurogamer describing it as “spectacular” and a triumphant return for BioWare.

For now, though, the numbers speak louder than the accolades. EA faces mounting pressure to refine its strategy and win back players’ trust. As the company recalibrates, its next moves will be critical in shaping its future trajectory.
