Each companion has a unique skill tree and abilities. Additionally, every companion has a central passive called the Veilguard Skill, which serves as a key part of their combat potential. How to Unlock Emmrich’s Veilguard Skill in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
To unlock Emmrich’s Veilguard skill in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, you will need to progress his companion storyline through The Sacrifice of Souls. After the final fight, you will have to help Emmrich make a choice. Depending on the nature of that choice, you will unlock one of two possible Veilguard skills for him.
Moreover, you cannot unlock both Veilguard skills for Emmrich in a single playthrough. Consequently, to experience both you will need to play a second time through or create a separate save file. Additionally, with this choice, you will also unlock a legendary armor for Emmrich. The armor associated with each choice has a unique design. Moreover, the traits on each armor are different and can affect your Emmrich build.
Finally, the choice you will be making for Emmrich is whether to bring Manfred back to life or achieve his life’s dream of lichdom. The rewards will trigger at the end of the quest, and you will receive the armor and unlock the skill automatically.

Emmrich Manfred Veilguard Skill
All features and mechanics of Emmrich’s Manfred Veilguard Skill:
- Name: Life’s Embrace
- Description: Your Low Health threshold is now increased by 10%. The party deals 50% more damage while you have Low Health.
If you choose to convince Emmrich to bring Manfred’s spirit back, then you will unlock the Life’s Embrace Veilguard skill. This skill will unlock automatically for you and does not require you to spend a skill point.
The Life’s Embrace passive requires you to stay at Low Health for the buff to take effect. The first trait increases Rook’s low health threshold by 10%. The second trait will boost the overall damage for you and all your party by 50% while you have a Low Health status.
Playing Dragon Age: The Veilguard with Low Health can be a dangerous game, especially if you have one of the higher difficulty settings active. It means that you will need to lose some health first to trigger the Low Health status. The Low Health status typically triggers when you have less than 30% of your health left. Therefore, with the Life’s Embrace passive this condition will now be active when Rook has less than 40% health.
You can boost this threshold further by equipping The Burden ring, which increases the Low Health threshold by another 10%. Additionally, it also boosts your damage at low health by 20%. However, it comes at a cost because with it your health can never be above 70%. This is a high-risk, high-reward type of gameplay that will likely not be for everyone.
Emmrich Manfred Legendary Armor
All features and mechanics of Emmrich’s Manfred Legendary Armor:
- Name: Graven Vestments
- Weight: Light
- Rarity: Legendary
- Companion only: Emmrich
- Traits:
- Detonations deal +50% damage vs. health while you are at Low Health.
- Detonations grant you Invulnerable while you are at Low Health.
The Graven Vestments legendary armor grants you bonuses when causing detonations while at low health. The first trait states that all detonations deal 50% more damage while you are at low health. Then, the second trait give you the Invulnerable condition while you are at low health.
The traits on the Graven Vestments legendary armor are building off of the bonuses you get with the Life’s Embrace passive. If you are willing to attempt the challenge of playing while constantly trying to maintain low health, the damage boost could be incredible. However, this will take a lot of player skill to pull off. You will have to be excellent at timing your blocks or dodging away from attacks. Furthermore, if you heal enough to loose the low health status, you’ll have to be careful about what attacks you allow to hit Rook in order to get your health back down.
Emmrich Lichdom Veilguard Skill
Features and mechanics of Emmrich’s Lichdom Veilguard Skill:
- Name: Death’s Caress
- Description: All of Emmrich’s Abilities apply Necrosis when dealing damage. The party’s Affliction damage is increased by 25%.
If you choose to persuade Emmrich to achieve his dream of lichdom, then you will unlock the Death’s Caress Veilguard skill. Like all other Veilguard skills, this one will unlock automatically for you and does not require you to spend a skill point.
The Death’s Caress passive grants Emmrich a Necrosis and affliction boost. With the first trait, all of Emmrich’s damage-dealing abilities will now apply Necrosis. Furthermore, the second trait boosts the party’s Affliction damage by 25%.
The boost to Affliction damage with this passive is decent here. The first trait may seem a bit less valuable since all of Emmrich’s damage dealing abilities are already based on Necrotic damage. This just guarantees the affliction. However, it obviously ties in with the second trait, and will build even more with the legendary armor you get.
Emmrich’s Lichdom Legendary Armor
All features and mechanics of Emmrich’s Lichdom Legendary Armor:
- Name: Lich’s Vestige
- Weight: Light
- Rarity: Legendary
- Companion only: Emmrich
- Traits:
- Detonating a Sundered enemy applies Quietus.
- If the Detonated enemy already has Necrosis or Quietus, deal +200 Necrotic damage.
The Lich’s Vestige legendary armor has bonuses that give Emmrich a unique affliction called Quietus. With the first trait, anytime Emmrich detonates a Sundered enemy, it applies Quietus. Furthermore, the second trait builds off of this, where if the detonated enemy already has Quietus or Necrosis, then the detonation deals an additional +200 Necrotic damage.
Quietus is a unique affliction that Emmrich uses to deal Necrotic damage over time to enemies. Only he can apply it, which means you will have to set up your other companion or Rook’s build with an ability that applies Sundered. Then, Emmrich can use his Final Rites ability to detonate Sundered and trigger all of these effects.
