Everything you need to know about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s stuttering error on PC, including possible fixes, reasons, and more.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s PC launch might not have been as bad as its predecessor, but it’s still far from perfect. While the game does scale pretty well across various PC configurations, it isn’t immune to the common issues that plague most PC ports nowadays. One of the biggest issues that PC players have to contend with is stuttering, be it traversal or shader-related.
Unfortunately, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, much like its predecessor, does have its fair share of stuttering-related issues. Furthermore, the game also seems to be very VRAM-hungry. However, the game’s low texture and image quality do not justify its incredibly high VRAM requirement.
The high VRAM requirement is also the main culprit behind the game’s stuttering. Thankfully, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s PC port ships with plenty of options that you can tweak to remedy the stuttering and frame-time problem. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how you can potentially fix the stuttering error in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s PC port.
Possible Fixes for Stuttering Error in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

There are multiple reasons for the stuttering issue in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. The primary reason for the traversal stutters is the game’s use of Unreal Engine 4. For Rebirth, Square Enix used roughly the same iteration of UE4 as Final Fantasy 7 Remake, albeit with some changes.
Firstly, the game now relies heavily on mesh shaders to render its textures and also the open-world segments. Furthermore, while mesh shaders do alleviate the CPU load of rendering an expansive open world, it does so at the cost of increased VRAM usage. Even at 1080p, the game often spikes above the 6 GB VRAM limit. The VRAM consumption increases with higher presets.
Due to the game’s use of mesh shaders, Square Enix has also made it mandatory for players to use a hardware ray tracing-capable GPU for Rebirth. As such, if you try to force the game to run on a GPU that’s not officially supported by the game’s renderer, you’re going to get stutters. In addition to that, the game also tends to spill onto system memory whenever it runs out of VRAM. Even at 1080p, with High Textures, the game often ends up using more than 17 GB of system RAM, going well beyond 8 GB VRAM usage.
Thankfully, the VRAM issue can be fixed by lowering the Texture Resolution, based on your GPU. Another reason for the stuttering issue is faulty or corrupted installation. Thankfully, that can also be remedied using Steam’s file verification tool. That said, the following are some tips that should help you fix the stuttering error in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PC.
Update GPU Drivers
This goes without saying that you should always update your GPU drivers, especially before a new Triple-A or Double-A release. Updating drivers is quite easy nowadays, thanks to tools like the Nvidia App or AMD Adrenaline. You can use these applications to automatically update your GPU drivers and install them when you’re not using your PC.
Alternatively, you can simply go to Nvidia’s or AMD’s official website and download the driver’s installer from there. It is recommended to do a clean install of new drivers if you’re manually updating it. Furthermore, if you’re not aware of your GPU’s manufacturer, you can check its details under the Process tab in the Task Manager.
Lower Graphics Settings

Since the stuttering is mostly tied to VRAM usage, lowering the game’s settings based on your PC hardware helps a lot. If you’re using a 6 GB VRAM GPU, make sure to limit the Texture Resolution to Low. If you’re using an 8 GB VRAM GPU, use the Medium preset. And lastly, if you have more than 8 GB VRAM, you can easily go for High or Ultra presets, as long as you have an equally powerful CPU.
Additionally, if you’re CPU bottlenecked, lower the Characters Displayed and Character Shadows Display Distance settings to 4 or lower. This will help reduce the stress on your CPU. You can also use the dynamic resolution scaling to further boost your frame rate.
Verify Game Files
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a massive game in terms of its file size. As such, it’s quite easy for the game’s installation to get corrupted during the download process. On PC, corrupted downloads aren’t anything new. In fact, it’s been around since the inception of online storefronts and DRMs.
Thankfully, Steam provides a very effective solution against such cases – the File Verification Tool. This tool essentially allows you to scan a game’s directory to look for corrupted or missing files. If it detects those files, it simply replaces them with new downloads. This not only saves time but also the headache of uninstalling and reinstalling a 100+ GB game.
Here’s how you can use the File Verification Tool on Steam:
- Launch Steam > Click on Library.
- Right-click on Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth from the list of games in your Steam library.
- Click on Properties > Local Files.
- Click on Verify Integrity of Game Files.
- Wait for the files to get checked.
- Once done, launch the game.
