Artifact is a part of your character’s equipment in Genshin Impact that contributes to their overall damage. Artifacts are crucial to any account looking to take on high-level bosses in the game. Good artifacts can make even a level 1 character deal respectable damage. Conversely, bad artifacts can make a level 90 character seem mediocre. Artifacts have various main stats, sub-stats, effects, and set bonuses which could make them challenging to understand.

Therefore, here you will find a complete guide on how artifacts work in Genshin Impact.

Understanding an Artifact

An artifact is comprised of various parts. Each part comes together to determine the value and rarity of an artifact. Let us take a look at the different parts of an artifact:

  • Artifact Type: This can be of one of five types. Flower of Life, Plume of Death, Sands of Eon, Goblet of Eonothem and lastly, Circlet of Logos.
  • Main Stat: This will be the biggest number seen on your artifact. Additionally, this will be your first priority to check whenever you get any artifact. The main stat is the primary indicator of an artifact’s potential.
  • Sub-Stats: These stats are found just below the main stat. If you find an artifact with the correct main stat, the sub-stats are the next thing to check.
  • Set: The overarching set of the artifact will determine its set bonus. Characters can gain this set bonus if they equip the required number of artifacts from the same set. Therefore, it is often rewarding to use artifacts of only one set on a character.
  • Lore: Lastly, you will notice that the lore of the artifact is also written at the bottom. However, it does not affect your gameplay by any means. Therefore, it is up to each individual whether they want to pay attention to this lore or not.

Artifact Type and Main Stats:

The Main Stat of an Artifact is often tied to the type of Artifact. Till now, this only exists in 2 cases:

Any Artifact which is a Flower of Life, will always have HP as its main stat. You cannot get any other stat as your main stat for this piece. This does not change, regardless of the artifact’s tier/rarity or its set.

Secondly, the Plume of Death, also known as the feather, will always have flat attack as its main stat. Just like before, this won’t change on a case-to-case basis either. If you have a Plume of Death, the main stat will always be flat attack.

Rarity:

Artifacts can range from extremely common (one star) to the rarest (five star). You can acquire more five star artifacts, the higher your Adventure Rank is. Therefore, lower rank players will often be rocking three or four star artifacts.

Apart from their names, there are way more differences between these ranks. One of the main differences is the maximum level of these artifacts. Five-star artifacts are the only ones that can be leveled up to Level 20.

Set Bonuses:

Once you equip a certain required number of artifacts of the same set, you gain a set bonus. This set bonus is usually two-piece or four-piece. However, there are some artifacts which do have 1 piece set bonuses as well.

These set bonuses are often tailor made for some specific characters or mechanics. Therefore, checking your set bonus before equipping the artifact is advisable.

Upgrading Artifacts

Artifacts you gain start at level 1. To raise their main and sub-stats, you need to start leveling them up. You can level up artifacts via feeding them other artifacts. However, ensure that you don’t feed something perfectly good and usable into another artifact.

The other method is through using Sanctifying Unctions and Sanctifying Essences. Sanctifying Unions each give 2,500 EXP to an artifact. On the other hand, Sanctifying Essence gives an artifact 10,000 EXP. These 2 methods are the primary methods of upgrading an artifact.
