Patch 8 of Baldur’s Gate 3 has introduced 12 new subclasses to the game. One of the most anticipated among them is the Bladesinging Wizard subclass. The Bladesinger relies on a unique Class Action, Bladesong, to increase AC, heal, and deal Force damage. As an ability, Bladesong is reasonably complex, raising questions about its functions in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Bladesong is an ability unique to the Bladesinger Wizards subclass that allows them to channel their magic through an elegant interflow of song, dance, and bladework. Here are some key points to know about Bladesong in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Unlocked at level 2: Bladesong becomes available to the Bladesinger Wizard subclass upon reaching level 2.

  • Buffs: Gain a proficiency bonus (+2 at level 1, +3 at level 5, and +4 at level 9) to Armor Class and Constitution saving throws while Bladesong is active. Your movement speed is increased by 3 m / 10 ft, and you have advantage on Acrobatics checks.

  • Limitations: To gain any advantages from Bladesong, you cannot be wearing anything heavier than Light Armour or be carrying a shield. You must also be wielding a one-handed or versatile bladed weapon in the main hand. For example, a rapier, scimitar, dagger, longsword, shortsword, or sickle.

  • Class Action: Since Bladesong is activated as a Class Action, it does not consume any actions or bonus actions.

  • Duration and Charges: Bladesong lasts for 10 turns, and the Bladesinger can accumulate multiple Bladesong charges similar to Rage charges. A Bladesinger will have 2 Bladesong charges at level 2, 3 charges at level 5, and 4 charges at level 9.

Bladesong Climax

While using Bladesong, you can cast Bladesong Climax using a bonus action to unleash all the Bladesong Damage Charges and Bladesong Healing Charges you have accumulated in a leaping AoE attack.

  • Bladesong Damage Charges: When you attack with a level 1 or higher spell, you gain 1 turn of Bladesong Damage Charge. For each charge you gain, Bladesong Climax will deal 1d6 Force damage in an AoE.

  • Bladesong Healing Charges: When you attack with a weapon, you gain 1 turn of Bladesong Healing Charges. For each charge you gain, Bladesong Climax will heal you and your allies for 1d6 hit points.

(Note: Bladesong Damage or Healing Charges stack up as 1 turn of charge at a time. However, the charges do not expire at the end of your turn. They are either consumed by Bladesong Climax or expire when Bladesong ends.)

  • Use Bladesong before taking any actions or bonus actions, as Bladesong Damage or Healing Charges will add up once the ability is active.
  • Bladesong Climax can provoke an attack of opportunity from nearby enemies.
  • Enemies have to make an Intelligence saving throw against Bladesong Climax. If they succeed on the save, they will only take half the damage from the Bladesong Damage charges.
  • Spells cast from equipment and scrolls apply Bladesong Damage Charges.
  • Reaction spells do not add to Bladesong Damage Charges.
  • Booming Blade contributes to Bladesong Healing Charges since it is a spell.
