With Baldur’s Gate 3 patch 8 update coming up, we can see all classes receiving a new subclass. Moreover, The Way of the Drunken Master is the new subclass for the Monk class. This subclass utilizes the Drunk status as a buff to deal more damage to enemies, possibly making them drunk as well. The first exclusive offensive action you unlock in this class is the Drunken Technique.

However, players might not know how the action works. Here’s a guide to help you understand how Drunken Technique works in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Drunken Technique is an exclusive action for the Drunken Master that they learn upon reaching Level 3. It is an offensive action and effectively serves as an upgraded version of Flurry of Blows. On using the action, you punch twice quickly and grant yourself an additional 3m/10ft movement, which has the same benefits as Disengage. This means enemies cannot use the Attack of Opportunity when you move away after using Drunken Technique.

The Drunken Technique does 1d4 damage added with the number on your DEX or STR modifier. The game automatically uses the highest of both stats to include it during damage calculation. The damage increases to 1d6 at Monk Level 3 and 1d8 at Monk Level 9.

The cost of this action is one bonus action and one Ki point. Ki is a special type of energy exclusive to monks and is needed for most of the class-exclusive offensive actions. Monks replenish their Ki every short and long rest. However, Drunken Master can drink alcohol to regain Ki points once per in-game day. Additionally, Drunken Master is immune to the negative effects of Drunk status upon hitting Level 3.

Lastly, the Drunken Technique action does benefit from passives such as Martial Arts: Deft Strikes and Martial Arts: Dextrous Attacks. Deft Strikes makes sure your minimum damage is at least 1d4 Bludgeoning damage. Moreover, having Dextrous Attacks uses your DEX stat instead of STR for unarmed and Monk weapon attacks, that is, if your DEX modifier is higher.

This concludes our guide on how the Drunken Technique works in Baldur’s Gate 3. If you are having trouble with how the new class works, here’s a Drunken Master build that you can use to punch your enemies to the afterlife.
