Patch 8 of Baldur’s Gate 3 has added a new Paladin subclass perched at the very top of lawful good. The Oath of the Crown Paladins are sworn to the ideals of civilization and manifest their righteous zeal with several powerful cleric spells and unique abilities perfect for tanking and buffing. While the patch undergoes stress tests before being rolled out, let’s take a closer look at one of their less-hyped abilities, Righteous Clarity, to see how it will affect their gameplay.

Righteous Clarity is a Channel Oath action exclusive to the Oath of the Crown Paladin subclass in Baldur’s Gate 3. It buffs the paladin’s or their allies’ attack rolls with the target’s proficiency bonus. The player gains access to the ability at level one and can cast it using a bonus action and a Channel Oath Charge. They can channel it over long ranges of 18 m (60 ft), and the effect lasts for 10 turns.

Righteous Clarity is a powerful ability for the Oath of the Crown Paladins, especially in the early game. It adds the target’s proficiency bonus to their attack rolls, which is +2 at level 1, +3 at level 5, and +4 at level 9. While there are a lot of ways to buff attack rolls in the mid-to-late game, the +2 and +3 bonus to attack rolls in the early game is extremely useful. This is especially valuable since Righteous Clarity only consumes a bonus action and does not require concentration.

Righteous Clarity is somewhat comparable to the Oath of Vengeance Paladin’s Vow of Enmity, which gives them an Advantage on attack rolls against an enemy. However, players can access Righteous Clarity at level 1, whereas they unlock Oath of Vengeance at level 3. Additionally, the latter targets a single enemy, while the former serves as a general 10-turn buff on attack rolls against any target.

Like most of the Oath of the Crown Paladin’s unique abilities, Righteous Clarity is perfect from a role-playing perspective. The paladin channeling the ability is absolute in their belief and intentions, causing their own or their allies’ weapons to strike true. Ultimately, Righteous Clarity is a versatile ability in the Oath of the Crown Paladin’s arsenal, contributing to the subclass’ well-rounded playstyle.
