Once an ally of Balduran, Ansur the Dragon now rests in the underbelly of Baldur’s Gate, and you will have to fight him.
Ansur the Dragon is an optional boss in Baldur’s Gate 3, and players will encounter his undead form. The legend goes that the dragon resides in the underbelly of Baldur’s Gate. Nicknamed the Heart of the Gate, he holds ties to the Emperor and plays a crucial role in the quest to eliminate the Elder Brain.
In this guide, we shall cover everything you need to know about this legendary dragon, including where to find him and how to beat him.
Who is Ansur The Dragon?
Ansur the Dragon was once an ally of Balduran, the founder of Baldur’s Gate. When Balduran was infected by the Illithid, the dragon sought all forms of cure. However, when all cures failed, Ansur was swayed by the delusion of ending his friend’s pain forever, an act of mercy in the dragon’s eyes.
Ansur took the drastic step of trying to kill Balduran, which led to a fight. The dragon was slain by the man he once believed to be a friend and reduced to a mere myth.
Where to Find Ansur the Dragon
The dragon rests under the city of Baldur’s Gate, beneath Wyrm’s Rock Fortress. Enter the Wyrm Rock Prison and break the wall near the entrance. Then, enter the chamber and follow the path through the door on the right till you reach a dead end.
On the left, you shall find two draconic torches facing each other. Use lightning attacks on these torches, and this will unveil a hidden passageway. Follow the path on the right to reach an iron gate. Past the gate lies the Wyrmway.
In the Wyrmway, you will find four chambers – the Chamber of Justice, the Chamber of Courage, the Chamber of Insight, and the Chamber of Strategy. Solve these four trials to access the Dragon’s Sanctum. The sanctum holds a statue of Balduran, and in front of it there’s space for another, hinting at the history of the two characters.
How to Beat Ansur the Dragon
Preparation
- Carry Lightning Resistance potions as the dragon has a flurry of attacks that inflict lightning damage. You can also use the Protection from Energy spell for this and provide your party with the necessary debuffs.
- Before initiating dialogue with the dragon, spread your party around the area to minimize the effect of AOE attacks. This also allows you to have the dragon covered from various angles.
- Behind the dragon, you will spot a legendary Greatsword. Before interacting with Ansur, have a sneak character go behind the dragon. Then, in the midst of dialog, switch to that character and pick the sword. Start the fight off with a sneak attack if necessary.
- Carry Dragon-Slaying arrows as they have a perk that doubles the damage dealt to dragons.
Fight the Dragon
Once the fight kicks off, be wary of Myrmidons. These are minions in the arena scrambling for your attention. Do not engage and waste turns on them; focus on Ansur instead. The dragon’s AOE attacks deal damage across the arena. While he charges the attack, hide behind the ice crystals scattered nearby. You can Dash behind the crystal, jump to cover, or use Misty Step to teleport behind them. The AOE attack, Stormheart Nova, will damage the minions and likely eliminate them altogether.
After the dragon uses Stormheart Nova, he will switch to using lightning bolts. This is where Lightning Resistance is of utmost importance. If you had scattered the party at the start, you will now be able to deal damage to Ansur from multiple angles. Ranged attacks will work especially well.
Rewards for Killing Ansur the Dragon
Once Ansur has met with his second death, he drops Balduran’s Giantslayer, the very weapon that had once slain the dragon. You will also come across a letter titled “Dear Ansur”. Written by Balduran, the heartfelt letter requests the dragon to halt its search for a cure. You should also collect the Legendary Helm of Balduran.
