Everything you need to know about how to change your Companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, details on the party system, and more.
Companions are arguably one of the most important elements of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Not only do they play a vital role in the game’s main story, but they’re also an essential element of the moment-to-moment gameplay. Similarly to most action RPGs, Dragon Age: The Veilguard also features a dedicated party mechanic.
As you progress through the game, you will meet and unlock new Companions, each with their own set of skills and abilities. While The Veilguard features a total of seven different Companions, you can only have two of them active at any given time. As such, it’s crucial to know how you can switch between different Companions.
Each Companion has their own skill tree, and you will find some of them to be better suited to certain combat scenarios compared to others. As such, you will often find yourself switching Companions to stay more efficient in combat. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to change your Companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
How To Switch Between Different Companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
There are essentially two different ways to switch Companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. You can either swap them before starting a quest, or you can use the Beacons to do the same. The Beacons are The Veilguard’s fast travel points. When you interact with a Beacon, you can choose to either travel to different areas of the map or change your party members.
Unfortunately, you cannot switch your Companions at any time during gameplay or combat. Once you embark on a quest, you can only change your Companions at the Beacons. Furthermore, there are certain quests in the game where you’re locked to a specific Companion loadout.
When you start a quest in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, you will be given the choice to “Change Party.” The Change Party option allows you to switch your Companions. You also get a similar Change Party option when interacting with the Beacons. If you die during combat, you and your party will respawn at the last Beacon you interacted with.
Since the Beacons are usually located near most boss fight dungeons and arenas, respawning near them isn’t much of a hassle. Furthermore, respawning at a Beacon allows you to change your Companions if you find your current party not effective against a boss or enemy encounter.
It should be noted that, for the first few main story chapters, you won’t be able to switch your Companions. This is mostly due to the opening main story quests being heavily tied to some of the first few Companions. Furthermore, during the first couple of chapters, you only get access to two Companions anyway, hence the lack of any option to switch to others.
