The Sacrifice of Souls quest in Dragon Age: The Veilguard requires you to find Hezenkoss’s Lantern and defeat her.
Alongside the compelling story quests, Dragon Age: The Veilguard offers companion quests and region quests to explore the lore further. The Sacrifice of Souls is the companion quest of Emmrich Volkarin, a senior necromancer companion recruited to Rook’s party during the ‘Where the Dead Must Go’ quest.
The Sacrifice of Souls is the main quest of Emmrich’s questline and he unlocks his Veilguard skill at the end of the quest. This guide walks you through the Sacrifice of Souls quest in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
The Sacrifice of Souls Quest Guide: Dragon Age: The Veilguard
The Sacrifice of Souls companion quest can be initiated after completing the story quest Blood of Arlathan. Talk to Emmrich in his chamber at the lighthouse when he has a yellow exclamation mark.
The quest focuses on the search for Hezenkoss’s Lantern and the battle to stop her rituals. Manfred, Emmrich’s charming skeleton assistant, plays a key role in the quest and eventually becomes the show-stealer. You will have two options to conclude Emmrich’s storyline at the end of the quest.
Finding Hezenkoss’s Lantern
The quest takes place at the Blackthorne Courtyard, where Johanna Hezenkoss is hosting a party for several guests. Investigate the front door (which is locked), then climb the ladder to access an alternative route into the main hall.
Follow the marker to the balcony. Observe Manfred and listen to the dialogue of a man in the hall. This directs you to look for a spectral tome in the library.
Head to the library, where you will encounter undead guards. Defeat them and search for the spectral tome, which can be found on a table between two sets of chairs.
Hand over the spectral tome to Manfred in the Servant’s Wing, then head to the balcony to listen to more dialogue. This will guide you to a Shrine. Follow Emmrich to the Forgotten Shrine.
When interacting with the Shrine door, you will be asked to find the key. Fortunately, Manfred has the key for you. Use it to open the Shrine. After a cutscene, head to the Secret Passage and fight some undead guards there.
Follow the red tapestries to find a secret door. Manfred once again saves the day, squeezing through a wall hole to open the door for you.
Take the elevator to Hezenkoss’s workshop. Defeat the enemies there, including the Deathchill Pride Demon. Continue onward to find Hezenkoss’s Lantern in the upper library. When Emmrich interacts with the Lantern, a cutscene will start, and Hezenkoss will appear.
Defeating Hezenkoss and the Bone Golem
In the cutscene, Hezenkoss resurrects a massive Bone Golem and absorbs the spirits of the people around her.
After the cutscene, the battle begins. Hezenkoss is weak to Necrotic and resistant to Cold. Focus on destroying her barrier shield first. During the fight, she will frequently summon undead minions. Clear them first to prevent them from hindering your progress.
Beware of the Bone Golem’s projectiles and AoE attacks, which deal heavy damage. These appear as red circles in the arena. Hezenkoss also launches energy beams when she teleports to the center of the arena. Avoid these attacks by dodging or evading.
How Does the Sacrifice of Souls Quest End
Upon defeating Hezenkoss, another cutscene plays, showing Manfred sacrificing himself to retrieve the lantern and passing it to Emmrich.
Later, during a cutscene with the Lich Lord, you will have two options:
- Bring back Manfred by sacrificing Lichdom.
- Convince Emmrich to embrace Lichdom and live an immortal life.
Once Emmrich makes his choice, The Sacrifice of Souls quest concludes. Rewards include:
- Increased bond with companions
- 3,750 XP
- 600 Gold
- Veilguard Skill for Emmrich
