Where the Dead Must Go is a main story quest in Chapter 8 of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. This is the first time that you meet Professor Emmrich Volkarin, a renowned necromancer of the Mourn Watch faction.

The quest starts with Bellara leading Rook to meet the powerful mage in Necropolis. He is warm and welcoming in a rather cold and ‘dead’ place. You then accompany him to solve the troubles in the area and locate the source of the screams that he has been hearing.

You can take only one party member with you because the Mourn Watcher will join your party as soon as you meet him. Bellara will turn up for the cutscene either way, but you have the freedom to change any other party member besides her if you wish for it. Once you begin the mission, you will meet your final companion for the first time, and the quest will begin.

As the quest begins after the cutscene, you have to follow Emmrich Volkarin until you end up in a room where there is a Despair Spirit. Defeat it, and Emmrich will want to explore the issue more deeply. Follow him again to a giant hall where the bell is located. There will be many undead here that you need to defeat.

If you are the only one standing victorious in the room, follow Emmrich again. You will find out that he needs a Wisp to open the barred door to reach the upper levels. Wisps are peaceful and helpful spirits that look like floating blue orbs. There is one located at the opposite end of the hallway from the locked door.

Run into the Wisp and it will start following you. Reach the smallholder near the locked door, and the Wisp will align itself automatically and unlock the path ahead.

Keep following the path ahead of you. Eventually, you will have to drop down from a platform to a lower level, and there will be enemies present to greet you. However, if you wish to avoid combat, you can simply turn right and keep following the quest marker until a small cutscene plays out soon after.

You are now standing on an outer pathway of sorts. There are echoes of the Despair Spirits all over your way. These work like proximity mines. If you come into their circle of effect, some enemies will spawn to attack you, and you will have to defeat them. On the other hand, you can completely avoid them by simply walking around them.

As you make your way down the stairs, you will notice there are a couple of stairs on each side of you in regular intervals leading to empty spaces. Use these to reach the big door peacefully without triggering any Echoes on the way.

Once you do, you will see holders that need wisps to activate the door. Emmrich will now call upon the Wisps. You won’t see them because they will spawn in the empty spaces behind the stairs that you just used to sneak past the Echoes. Collect four Wisps at your own pace. Emmrich will now open the door.

Reaching the Chains to Free the Bell

Enter the door and follow the quest marker. There will be enemies in your way and another Echo that you can walk past. Open a door and continue on your path. You will eventually reach an open location. Rook and their companions can’t walk up the dune because it’s slippery. Instead, climb the ledges on your left and follow the path to progress further through the Where the Dead Must Go quest.

In a new hall that you enter eventually, there are braziers placed in every corner that the necromancer will request you to light. Walk up to them and interact. He will then perform a ritual on the skeleton in the middle for a dialogue. A Wisp will appear on the body. Walk through it and let it sit on the holder near the quest marker.

Leave the hall. Look on your left, there must be a giant red wall. There are Venatori in the vicinity that you need to take down before that wall disappears. Continue up the newly unlocked path and fight some more enemies. Interact with a man sitting on top of these flights of stairs.

At Last, Freeing the Bell

The path ahead is simple, and you finally reach the upper floor that you saw way earlier in the quest. Now, attack the crystals that are binding the Venatori chains to the bell. There will be retaliation from your enemies, but nothing that you and your friends can’t handle. Break all four of these chains in the same order that you happen to come across them.

After breaking the last one, jump down from a nearby open ledge. Now, as Emmrich Volkarin performs a long ritual to undo what the Venatori did here, you have to survive waves of enemies. The ritual will last for 3 minutes, and there will be all types of enemies. Survive, and the bell will finally ring, banishing the Despair Demon who was causing all the trouble.

Interact with a nearby item, and the quest ‘Where the Dead Must Go’ will wrap up after a few cutscenes.
