Navigating a world as ruthless as the Forgotten Realms in Baldur’s Gate 3 often pushes you into fight-or-flight situations. When engaged in battle, you may find yourself having a moral dilemma regarding whether to take or spare someone’s life. You do have the option of knocking an enemy out using non-lethal methods in case you are inclined towards sparing them.

In this guide, we shall go over how you can inflict non-lethal damage on enemies.

How to Deal Non-Lethal Damage

To deal non-lethal damage, you must go to the “Passives” tab in the hotbar. It is the fourth tab at the bottom of the screen. Here, you will find the option to enable or disable non-lethal attacks. If you select the option to deal non-lethal damage, all members of your party will experience the effect.

When inflicting non-lethal damage, you must be careful. Stick strictly to melee attacks, as non-lethal damage does not apply to ranged attacks. The same goes for spells and potions. These are lethal by default, so you must be very careful when using these against the enemy.

To turn non-lethal damage off, go back to the “Passives” tab and unselect Non-Lethal damage.

When Do You Use Non-Lethal Damage?

Non-lethal damage is perfect for situations where you do not want to kill the character you’re fighting. This could be due to moral obligations, or you may want to ensure that you are not locked out of quests in the future.

Non-lethal damage is especially useful in the early hours of the game when you’re still encountering potential companions. Certain choices can lead you to conflict against these characters. If you kill them, you will be locked out of having them as your companion for the rest of the game. Lae’zel is one such character that you may have to fight early on. You can choose to knock her out and not kill her, so her questline remains open.
