Discover how to defeat the Elven god Elgar’nan, the final boss in Dragon Age: The Veilguard during ‘The Dread Wolf Rises’ quest.
Electronic Arts’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the sequel to the ‘Dragon Age: Inquisition.’ The action RPG by BioWare focuses on the story of the protagonist, Rook, who takes the journey through Thedas to stop the gods by gathering forces. The game’s storyline is narrated through the story quests, companion quests, and region quests.
The Dread Wolf Rises is the Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s final quest, and you cannot turn back. As a part of the quest, you need to defeat the Elven god Elgar’nan, who is one of the primary antagonists of The Veilguard. Since it is the final battle of the game, it is obvious that the battle will be quite challenging. However, with proper analysis and a little support, it can go more smoothly.
Let’s analyze the attack patterns of Elgar’nan and devise a strategy on how to counter them to defeat him in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Elgar’nan Boss Fight Guide in Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Phase 1
As we already mentioned, Elgar’nan is the final boss and will be quite challenging to defeat. His health bar is considerably larger, and he will often move around the arena, which makes him difficult to track and attack. Let’s do a quick analysis of his attack patterns.
Attack Patterns
- He will summon lightning into the arena and follow with lightning bolts. Along with the lightning bolts, he often throws energy balls towards you.
- He will attack by swinging his sword after floating backwards a little.
- During the battle, the arena will be often occupied by the Aspect of Elgar’nan, a ghost clone of Elgar’nan. They deal major damage.
Strategy
- Most of his attacks, such as lightning summoning and throwing lightning bolts and energy balls, can be dodged easily. Just be cautious of the red circle that appears on the ground. If you find any red circle on the ground or a red bubble on your head, it is an indicator that you need to dodge the incoming attack.
- When he prepares to swing his sword, dodge backwards to avoid the attack.
- Whenever the Aspect of Elgar’nan appears in the arena, first clear them as they do a lot of damage. Don’t stay in their line of attack, which is indicated as red.
- Use Emmrich or Lucanis to deal Necrotic damage.
Phase 2
After a cutscene, phase 2 begins, and Elgar’nan restores his health bar. During this phase, the entire arena will be blacked out except the center. Your companions can’t help you during this phase. All the attacks you perform don’t have any considerable impact on Elgar’nan. All you can do is dodge all his attacks and survive till the end of this phase.
Phase 3
After a cutscene, you may have noticed there is a change in the appearance of Elgar’nan. Yes, his horns and hands have flames during this phase. As a result, he has a change in the elemental weakness at this phase – Resists Fire and is Vulnerable to Cold. In addition to the change in appearance, he also performs some new attacks at this phase.
Attack Patterns
- Similar to his sword-swinging attack, he now performs a fire-sword swing.
- During this phase, the outer arena often fills with fire in a circular pattern.
- He performs an attack by combining electricity and his sword swinging. Also, he launches fireballs toward you, similar to his lightning summon.
Strategy
- You can dodge most of these attacks similar to the strategy in the first phase. The sword-swinging, and ranged fireballs can be dodged when timed perfectly.
- When the arena fills with fire in a circular pattern, stay at the center of the arena and deal heavy damage to Elgar’nan.
Once you manage to lower his health bar fully during phase 3, the battle ends with a cut scene.
