Learn how to safely extract in Dark and Darker using portals, ropes, lifts, and more before the timer ends.
Dark and Darker is a fantasy RPG that can be quite unforgiving with its dungeon-crawling mechanics. This is especially true when extracting from a map with the timer running out. If the player doesn’t manage to extract or escape in time, they will lose all the loot they have collected throughout the level, as well as the gear they brought with them.
However, there are several regular extraction points that can be used for extracting solo or as a team, with hints and indications of their location.
Different Types of Extraction in Dark and Darker
Rope Extraction
- Appears in the second half of the match.
- Looks like a knotted blue rope on the map.
- It can take damage when interacting with the rope.
- Only one player can escape.
- One-time use.
Stairs Extraction in Dark and Darker
- Looks like a blue staircase with three steps on the map.
- Accessible in the second half of the match, when the gate opens and the stairway’s flanking torches are lit with blue flames.
- Only one player can escape.
- One-time use.
- If the gate is open but the torches are unlit, the escape has already been used.
Lift Extraction
- Appear randomly throughout the match.
- Look like a blue square on the map with an upward and downward pointing triangle inside, resembling the buttons used to call elevators.
- Multiple players can escape.
- Usable multiple times in the Goblin Caves map.
- Usable only once in the Frost Mountain map by activating it with a lever.
Raft Extraction in Dark and Darker
- Appear randomly throughout the match.
- Looks like a blue boat on the map.
- Use by jumping onto the raft.
- Multiple players can extract.
- Available multiple times throughout the match.
Portal Extraction
- Interact with blue portal pedestals to open a blue portal. Step through the portal to extract.
- The red portals will take you deeper into the dungeon.
- There are three portal escapes on each map.
- Appear when time runs out.
- Portal escapes are not marked on the map.
- Circular stone markers on the ground with blue light seeping through their cracks mark the positions of the portal pedestals’ emergence.
- When time runs out, the blizzard begins closing in, and a safe circle is marked on the map. There will be a portal within the area marked in the circle.
- Once the portal is open, it will stay open until used by a player to escape.
- Only one player can extract using the portal, after which it will disappear.
- The player takes no damage once they have entered the portal.
- One-time use.
