How to find and beat the Black Loong in Black Myth Wukong

Where to find the Black Loong (Chapter 2 Secret Boss) in Black Myth Wukong

To find Black Loong, complete the Red Loong quest, encountered it in Chapter 2 Yellow Wind Ridge, which you can only unlock after getting the Loong Scales key item. The Loong Scales are also needed for another secret boss – Red Loong, which can be found in Chapter 1 of Black Myth Wukong – the Black Wind Mountain. And much like any other optional questline in Black Myth Wukong, the one involving the Black Loong can be completed even after finishing the main story.

How to obtain the Loong Scales key item

How to obtain the Loong Scales key item in Black Myth Wukong

The Loong Scales can be obtained early in Black Myth Wukong’s Chapter 2 – the Yellow Wind Ridge. After you defeat the main story boss, King of Flowing Sands and Second Rat Prince, simply rest at the Valley of Despair Keeper’s Shrine. Next, make your way to the cave towards the south, which leads to another boss fight – the First Rat Prince. After you defeat the Prince, you will find a wall with Buddhist scriptures in the boss arena.

Use the Wandering Wight Spirit Transformation skill to break the wall. Doing so will result in a crack appearing in the middle of the wall, which you can interact with to get to the other side of it. Inside the cracked wall, you will find an empty room with a treasure chest at the end of it.

Interact with the treasure chest and you will obtain the Loong Scales. While not necessary, you should also talk to the Old Man NPC (who also carries a massive gourd on his back) in Chapter 2 near the Cellar Keeper’s Shrine. Doing so will initiate the quest of the Loong King.

How to reach the Black Loong boss fight

Once you have the Loong Scales in your possession, simply head back to the Valley of Despair Shirne, and teleport to the Rockrest Flat. This Keeper’s Shrine is loathed right before the Stone Vanguard boss arena in the Yellow Wind Ridge. From the Shrine, take a right and proceed towards the set of stairs leading to a waterfall of sand. You will face a few enemies on the path that I recommend either sprinting past or taking down using Cloud Step.

Once you reach the waterfall of sand, interact with it to unlock the path behind it. You will find yourself facing a giant door, which you can also interact with to take you to the Black Loong’s boss fight arena.

How to Beat the Black Loong in Black Myth Wukong

How to defeat the Black Loong in Black Myth Wukong

Compared to the Red Loong, the Black Loong is a significant jump in difficulty, owing to the boss’ humanoid stature as well as his ability to hyperarmor through most regular attacks. Additionally, The Black Loong has an attack that it can perform in quick succession which can easily stun-lock and kill you.

Just like the Red Loong, the Black Loong is a single-phase boss fight with a limited set of moves. However, due to its increased defense, it can perform most of its attacks without getting staggered. Even the varied combos don’t have much of an effect on the boss. Thankfully, there are still a few things that can help you get an easy victory over the Black Loong.

The first thing to note is that the Black Loong is extremely weak to Wind and Burn elemental status. Furthermore, with a build around the Pillar Stance, you can easily bypass most of the AOE (area-of-effect) attacks of the boss with ease.

That said, given the boss is placed pretty early in Black Myth Wukong, defeating it with an early-game build can be a bit troublesome. Thankfully, you can return to the boss anytime during the main story. We recommend getting past Chapter 3 The New West and reaching Level 50 or above before facing the Black Loong. That way you will have enough Sparks to invest into your core Survival talents as well as the Pillar Stance.

Tips and tricks to defeat the Black Loong

Tips and tricks to defeat the Black Loong

The Black Loong in Black Myth Wukong usually doesn’t attack first and hence you will have plenty of time to dish out an opening combo. The best way to capitalize on the opening of this boss fight is to use Immobilize Spell as soon as the battle starts, and then dish out an entire varied combo, preferably with two Focus charges. Secondly, you will have to rely on Spells a lot, for this boss fight, especially Cloud Step or Rock Solid.

Most of the attacks of the Black Loong are within medium range, which is easy to decipher and dodge. However, once you get past the halfway mark on the boss’ healthbar, he starts using an AOE attack that covers the entire perimeter of the arena. This single attack can take you from full health to roughly 10%, without giving you any chance to retaliate.

Thankfully there are some really easy ways to counter it. Your primary objective in this boss fight is to deal as much damage as possible to get the boss to his AOE phase. Once you do that, simply retreat back and wait for the boss to finish his entire combo. Once he’s done with his AOE attacks, the Black Loong is staggered for a short while, giving you ample time to dish out a fully charged heavy attack.

Additional Techniques

Additionally, you can further extend the damaging window with Immobilize and end it with a critical attack using Cloud Step. As for the Transformation, save it for the AOE phase or best, for the final stretch of the battle. The Yin Tiger Transformation works wonders against the Black Loong, thanks to his ability to parry melee attacks and counter them with his own charged attack.

However, if you don’t have the Ebon Flow Transformation Spell, you can deal a ton of damage using the Red Tides as well. Make sure to use the charged attack of the Transformation (RT+B) at the end of the regular attack combo. Also, if you’re struggling with the AOE slam attacks, you can use the Transformation to tank it, just make sure to not use charged attacks or moves that exhaust Might.

Best Strategies for Defeating Black Loong

Best Strategies for Defeating Black Loong

Below are the best Strategies for how to find and beat the Black Loong in Black Myth Wukong:

  • Overhead slam attack: The Overhead slam is one of the regular attacks that the Black Loong does, which deals a moderate amount of damage. This attack can be easily avoided with a Perfect Dodge. Alternatively, you can use Rock Solid Spell to counter it.
  • Multi-hit mace attack: This combo is very similar to Yellowbrow’s (Chapter 3) swipe attacks, albeit much faster. The best way to avoid this attack is to dodge outwards. Alternatively, you can simply sprint away from the boss.
  • Ground slam AOE combo: This is the most devastating attack. The Black Loong essentially slams his maces across the ground, creating shockwaves that extend through the entirety of the arena. To effectively dodge these, you need to jump over them at the right time. The sequence should be two jumps in quick succession, then a small pause, then again two more jumps, followed by a longer pause and a final jump. You need to repeat this process twice before the combo ends. Alternatively, you can just tank this attack using Transformations.

Do note that varied combos don’t usually make much of a difference compared to regular attacks, against the Black Long. It’s best to respec your Sparks and invest them into Survival Foundation talents, to give you some defensive boost to withstand the damaging attacks of the boss. Additionally, you should also invest a few points into upgrading Immobilize, to increase its effectiveness.
