Reduce lag and stuttering in Oblivion Remastered by adjusting graphics settings, disabling plugins, and applying optimization fixes.

Oblivion Remastered has breathed new life into the charming 2006 original, powered by Unreal Engine 5 with overhauled textures and a real-time lighting system. While the Unreal Engine 5 upgrade brings breathtaking visuals and lighting effects, lackluster optimization with it can hamper performance for mid-range rigs. Fortunately, there are several proven ways to stabilize your performance and smooth out gameplay by tweaking graphics settings and applying community fixes.
Oblivion Remastered Frame Rate Stuttering Fixes

Change Graphics Settings in the Main Menu
If you want to experiment with different graphics settings, change them while in the main menu. Changing graphics while loaded into the game is known to cause performance issues. If you notice your game lagging and want to alter graphics settings, save and quit to the main menu. Then, change the graphics settings from the main menu before loading your save.
Graphics Settings
Besides lowering texture and shadow quality, here are some settings that can cause a dramatic change in performance:
- V-Sync: Switch off V-Sync as it can cause input lag and drop framerates. V-Sync is useful if you have a 60Hz monitor and want to prevent screen tearing.
- Lumen Hardware RT: Having Lumen Hardware RT on in Oblivion Remastered leads to a significant decrease in frame rates while providing a marginal improvement to ray tracing. If your game is stuttering, it is better to switch it off and keep Lumen Software RT Quality to Low.
- Upscaling: Choose FSR or DLSS (Nvidia card) upscaling and set it to balanced. Turn on frame generation as well.
Download An Optimization Fix Mod
Oblivion Remastered is designed in Unreal Engine 5, and its graphics optimization is lacking for mid-range PCs in particular. To lower stuttering and improve picture clarity, download the Engine.ini file given here and paste it in:
- %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Oblivion Remastered\Saved\Config\Windows
Delete or Rename sc.pcl.dll (sl.pcl.dll) File
If you are not using DLSS in the game, you can safely rename or remove the sc.pcl.dll plugin, which may show as sl.pcl.dll on some systems. It is likely not optimized for the game, and renaming it can ensure that it does not misbehave with the game’s processes. The file can be found at the following address:
- C:\Program Files (x86) > Steam > steamapps > common > Oblivion Remastered > Engine > Plugins > Marketplace > nvidia > DLSSS > Streamline > Binaries > ThirdParty > Win64
This plugin may be fixed in a future update of the game, and its removal is recommended only as a last resort.
