Oblivion Remastered delivers a stunning reimagining of the classic game, but for many players, graphical issues like texture flickering and shimmering shadows can break immersion. These visual glitches often appear in outdoor areas, affecting grass, water, and terrain. The visual discrepancies can be quite distracting while playing the game.

In outdoor environments, water, grass, and terrain frequently shift in appearance, shimmering as if a mirage hangs over them. Here are a few fixes you can try to reduce the shimmering effect in Oblivion Remastered.

How To Fix Reflections and Shadow Flickering Issues in Oblivion Remastered

1) Turn Off DLSS

The primary cause of the shimmering has been reported to be DLSS. DLSS is the upscaling technology exclusive to Nvidia’s RTX series of graphics cards. Switching from DLSS to FSR or XeSS upscaling can make the shimmering effect disappear entirely. You can find this setting in the graphics menu under the “Advanced” section. However, FSR leads to a significant loss of visual clarity, even creating ghost trails. XeSS eliminates ghosting and trailing completely and is the best alternative to DLSS upscaling for Oblivion Remastered.

If your GPU can handle it, another method to increase clarity is switching off DLSS and enabling TSR in “Anti-aliasing.” This will reduce the frame rate but significantly minimize any aberrations caused by upscaling. Try some of the other methods listed below before accepting a drop in FPS, as DLSS remains the best upscaling technology for the game if you have an Nvidia graphics card.

2) Turn Off Screen Space Reflections

Unlike most AAA games, Oblivion Remastered allows screen space reflections and ray tracing to run simultaneously. If you notice a counter shadow appearing from your weapon onto a water surface, turning off screen space reflections will resolve the issue. We still recommend using ray tracing if your graphics card supports it, as it makes a noticeable difference in the game’s visuals.

3) Lower Global Illumination or Shadow Quality

Shadow quality significantly impacts the game’s performance, and global illumination helps create subtle reflections through the interplay of lighting on surfaces. Users have reported that lowering either of these settings can eliminate misbehaving shadows and reduce visual noise.

4) Download an Optimization Mod

With lackluster optimization for mid-range PCs, the Unreal Engine 5-powered game can cause noticeable performance issues for such setups. A simple and popular optimization fix (Engine.ini file) can be downloaded here and pasted into:
