How to Get the Winter’s Clutches in BG3?
There are two different ways to get Winter’s Clutches in Baldur’s Gate 3. First, is by meeting Glut in the Myconid Colony of the Underdark and completing his quest called Avenge Glut’s Circle.
Secondly, if you do not wish to side with Glut against Sovereign Spaw, then you can also purchase Winter’s Clutches from Lady Esther on the Rosymourn Monastery Trail just through the Mountain Pass.
Step 1- How to Get Winter’s Clutches from Glut
First, you need to reach the Underdark, which you can start by finding the Well in the Blighted Village. From the bottom of the Well, head a little north and west until you reach the Whispering Depths. There will be a glowing green chasm near the Phase Spider Matriarch boss. Use Feather Fall (spell, scroll, or potion) and jump into the glowing chasm to land safely in the Underdark.
From where you land, head northwest to find the Myconid Colony. Spaw is a refugee who will speak to you as you head to leave the Colony from the western side. He will ask for your help defeating the Duergar intruders who have taken over the Decrepit Village. If you haven’t already killed the Duergar, then Glut will ask to accompany you. Be aware that Glut isn’t very powerful and it can be tricky to keep him alive sometimes. Best to leave him at the Colony, then return to him to show him the Duergar bodies.
Next, Glut will tell you of his plans to take over the Myconid Colony. You will need to agree to side with him and defeat Sovereign Spaw in battle. Successfully doing so will earn you the Winter’s Clutches gloves.
Step 2- How to Get Winter’s Clutches from Lady Esther
First, make your way to the far northwest corner of the main Act 1 map to find the Mountain Pass. Before going through, make sure you have resolved the conflict between the Emerald Grove and Goblin Camp one way or another.
On this new trail, head down until you find the Trielta Crags waypoint. Turn right/east at the fork in the path, and then keep your eye out for another turn right. This will lead you to a small area where Lady Esther has made camp.
Lady Esther will have something to discuss with you first, but look out for a dialogue option that asks her if she has any equipment worth trading. Finally, you’ll also be able to purchase Winter’s Clutches from her for 144 gold.
How to Use Winter’s Clutches in BG3?
The best way to use the Winter’s Clutches gloves in BG3 is by equipping them to a spellcasting Frost build that also has other methods of building stacks of Encrusted with Frost. This is one of the rarer conditions in Baldur’s Gate 3, and can be hard to build up stacks of 7. This is the ideal way to use this condition because on their next turn, your enemy must succeed a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or take 1d4 Cold and become Frozen.
The Oil of Freezing is another way to apply Encrusted with Frost, and you can craft it using Alchemy by combining Suspension of Frost Salamander Tongue and any Ashes. Additionally, the Coldbrim Hat (found in Balthazar’s Chambers at Moonrise Towers in Act 2) can also inflict two turns of Encrusted with Frost.
