In Minecraft, one of the most essential items for organizing your inventory and storing valuable resources is the chest. Chests provide a home for the vast quantities of resources, loot, and items gathered throughout your playthrough. While crafting chests may be a simple affair, their uses continue to expand and grow as you progress into the mid- and late game.

Chest Crafting Ingredients

To make a chest, you’ll need to have a crafting table and wood planks.

  • Wooden Planks x 8: Get wooden planks by cutting trees and placing the logs in your crafting grid. Each log yields four wooden planks. Any wood variant works, such as oak, birch, spruce, jungle, acacia, dark oak, etc.

Open your crafting table and place the eight wooden planks in a ring around the edge of the 3×3 grid like so:

  • Top row: Plank | Plank | Plank
  • Middle row: Plank | (empty) | Plank
  • Bottom row: Plank | Plank | Plank

The recipe will output one chest. Using an axe is the quickest way to mine a chest. You can find chests spawning in various areas across the world of Minecraft, from village houses and desert temples to Nether fortresses and End Ships.

A chest can store any item that can be picked up and added to the inventory. Right-click (use button) while holding a chest to place it. Right-click a chest to open it. A chest will not open if there is a solid block above it. Press escape to close the chest UI. Here are some features and tips regarding chests in Minecraft:

  • Storage space: A small chest can hold 27 stacks of items.
  • Shortcuts: You can shift-click items in your inventory to directly place them in an opened chest or vice versa. Holding shift and double-clicking will move all items of a particular type to and from an opened chest.
Large chest: You can place two chests next to each other to create a large chest, which doubles the storage capacity (up to 54 stacks of items).
  • Breaking chests: Breaking a chest will drop all the items inside it.

Advanced Uses

  • Pack animals: Right-clicking a tamed llama, mule, or donkey will add a chest on their back. It can be accessed by pressing the sneak and use buttons simultaneously. The chest’s capacity will scale with the animal’s strength.

  • Shulker Boxes: Place shulker shells above and below a chest on the crafting grid to make a shulker box, which functions as a portable chest. You can also place shulker boxes inside chests to increase their carrying capacity exponentially.

  • Boat with Chest: Place a boat and a chest together on the crafting grid to create a boat with a chest inside it, which you can travel in. A perfect ride to bring on long expeditions out on the sea.

  • Minecart with Chest: Place a minecart and a chest in a crafting grid to create a minecart with a chest inside. Works best in a powered rail system.

  • Trapped Chest: Combine a chest with a tripwire hook to create a trapped chest, which creates a redstone signal when opened. This redstone signal can be used to trigger a trap, like activating TNT.

  • Hoppers: Chests can be combined with hoppers and redstone mechanisms to create an automated storage system.
