Defeat the champion Desmal to collect the champion’s essence and use it to open the Gate of Deep Sorrows in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard features various types of quests, ranging from the game’s main story quest, and companion quests, to region quests. The region quests are categorized as region-specific and act as the game’s side quests. Some region quests start with ‘The Gate’ and require players to collect the champion essence from the region and use the essence on specific roots to clear the way.
Several paths in The Veilguard are blocked with blighted roots. Clear them using the champion’s essence. The Gate of Deep Sorrows is a regional quest of Treviso. This guide tells you how to complete the quest and how to open the Gate of Deep Sorrows in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Gate of Deep Sorrows Champion Location
Head to Treviso after recruiting Lucanis and reach Crow’s Road Rooftops. Jump across the gap near the beacon and enter through a broken window. There, you will catch a group of Venatori cultists blocking your way by performing some ritual with crystals. They are resistant to fire and weak to cold. Destroying the red crystals that protect them makes the fight easy.
Once defeated, look at the southeast corner of this rooftop for our target – Huge Blight Cyst. Prepare your party before destroying the Blight Cyst, as destroying it will release the champion. Once all is ready, destroy the Cyst to face the Champion – Desmal, Bloodbound to Elgar’nan.
How To Defeat Desmal, Bloodbound to Elgar’nan: Gate of Deep Sorrows Champion
Desmal, Bloodbound to Elgar’nan, is a level 25 champion with the elemental affinity of Necrotic resistance and Fire weakness. Desmal has several deadly attacks, such as:
- Basic attacks such as swinging the weapon, dealing AoE damage by jumping, and charging dashing attacks.
- Launching a beam toward you from his mouth.
- Spawning deadly red spikes on the arena.
- Spawning two Alpha Ghouls by throwing two stones.
- Some of the champion’s attacks also leave a burning residue, which remains for several seconds.
Don’t stay still during the battle; always keep moving to avoid or dodge Desmal’s majority of attacks. Deal consistent fire damage, as fire is the weakness of the champion. Conversely, avoid the usage of necrotic attacks with Lucanis, as they won’t have any effect.
Upon defeat, Desmal, Bloodbound to Elgar’nan drops 350 XP points, Etheric Remnants, 50 Grey Wardens Strength, and some Gold. In addition to all these, you will get the champion’s essence. Collect the champion’s essence and head to the Converged City to open the Gate of Deep Sorrows and hence complete the quest.
