Mastering how to Parry in a game like Dragon Age: The Veilguard becomes essential during combat. Here’s how to start practicing it.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard combat lets you explore mechanics like parry to exploit your enemy. We say ‘exploit’ because parrying can stagger your opponent, leaving them open for a follow-up attack or multiple attacks if you are quick enough.
Using parry can be tricky for gamers who are not familiar with the concept. In most games, it operates as a high-risk, high-reward mechanic, and The Veilguard is no different. You often face foes who are bigger and stronger than you. Blocking may not suffice in some situations, and parrying can help you turn the tide around in battles.
There’s this little question of ‘how to parry’ that may be stuck with some of you. Especially with those new to the mechanic or the Dragon Age franchise in general. Let us help you out with this.
Learn How to Parry During Stressful Combat Situations
If you ever find yourself overwhelmed by the enemies surrounding you, just take a breather and notice the attack pattern for a while from a distance. The game teaches you to Defend or Block incoming attacks. On the keyboard, it is the Q key, while on controllers, you can expect L1/LB to do the same job.
Those who have a shield, sword, or some other heavy weapon equipped can successfully deflect an enemy attack easily. The key to parrying is blocking at the right moment to catch your enemy off guard and stun them for a few moments.
In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, learning how to parry works the same way and requires a lot of trial and error. When an enemy is going to attack you, a yellow marker will flash over your head. This indicates that the attack can be parried. When the flash occurs, press the Block button to deflect it right before it hits you. Congratulations! You have successfully learned the mechanic. Take a moment to heal, create distance, and/or shower your enemy with some intense damage.
If, by any chance, you spot your enemy flashing red or see the indicator on your head turn red, which is otherwise yellow when somebody attacks, do NOT attempt to parry it. You can’t. Instead, dodge out of the way (Space key on PC and O/B on controllers). Parrying a red mark is a lost bet. Dodging will give you the advantage here, and unless one of your Abilities allows you to, don’t try parrying projectiles either.
That’s it. You can now try and master the mechanic at your own pace. Good luck, Rook!
