Monster Hunter Wilds has made hunts easier to a great extent, owing to a variety of QoL (quality of life) changes. From a plethora of environmental elements to AI hunters that you can call using the SOS Flare feature – the game is overall easier in many aspects. Hunting Assistant is a similar QoL change that can make hunts easier for you in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Gemma, your dedicated smithy, is one of the Hunting Assistants that you can unlock. However, you will need to complete some specific side missions first. In this article, we will explain how you can unlock Gemma as a Hunting Assistant in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Steps to Unlock Gemma as Hunting Assistant in Monster Hunter Wilds

You need to complete two side missions related to Gemma to unlock her as a Hunting Assistant in Monster Hunter Wilds:

  • High-Quality Materials
  • Smithy’s Seal of Quality

Here are the details of these side missions:

1) High-Quality Materials

You will unlock this quest shortly after reaching HR in Monster Hunter Wilds. In most cases, Gemma will call on to you when you pass by her in any of the Base Camps in the game. Once you converse with her, Gemma will tell you to kill bring back a Chatacabra Hide+.

To get this item, you will obviously have to kill or capture a Chatacabra in HR. You can either do this from the Optional Quests, or simply encounter one in the open world. Chatacabra is commonly found in the Windward Plains during the Plenty weather.

Once you have defeated this monster and acquired Chatacabra Hide+ you must deliver it back to Gemma at any Base Camp. There is no time limit for this side mission, and you can complete it at your own leisure. Only after you have completed this will you get the prompt for the next mission.

2) Smithy’s Seal of Quality

Sometime after the first quest, Gemma will once again beckon you in Monster Hunter Wilds. She will inform you that she has created a new hunting tool, and needs to test it out on the field. Once you accept this quest, the two of you will go to the Scarlet Forest region, where you will end up fighting a Lala Barina.

This quest will have an optional task where you will have to lure the monster towards Gemma. In case you want to see what Gemma’s tool actually does, you should lure this monster towards her. This action does not change the outcome of the quest however.

If you lure the monster towards Gemma, you will notice that the Smithy has laid a giant net to trap the monster. You are free to use any and every combo here to make the most of this trap. Once you defeat the monster, Gemma will be available as a Hunting Assistance in Monster Hunter Wilds.

What Does Gemma do as a Hunting Assistant in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Once you unlock Gemma as a Hunting Assistant in Monster Hunter Wilds, she will be able to lay down the same large net to trap monsters. However, this is a one-time use trap only. You cannot manually select a Hunting Assistant in Monster Hunter Wilds. Instead, this is a random event that can sometimes happen.

Gemma commonly appears as a Hunting Assistant in the Scarlet Forest, around the same area where she tested her trap. However, she can also sometimes appear in the Ruins of Wyveria and Windward Plains region and use the same trap.
