In Monster Hunter Wilds, Gemma is an energetic and curious character who fulfills the role of Avis Unit’s Smithy, meaning she will cater to the player’s blacksmith needs in crafting and upgrading weapons and armor. Her personality, eagerness towards her craft, and enthusiasm have quickly made her one of the most beloved characters of the new game.
“A smithy with the Research Commission. She’ll take care of all your weapon and armor crafting needs!”

What Is Gemma’s Role in Monster Hunter Wilds Story?
Gemma is the Avis Unit’s Smithy who can be seen at the base camps of different regions offering her services for the hunter. She’ll be at times seen accompanying the player, Nata, and Alma during the main story quests, especially when moving from one region to another.

We get two major looks at her story in Monster Hunter Wilds. In Iceshard Cliffs when you first encounter the Hirabami and scamper to find and rest at a camp, you have the option to talk with your fellow travelers. When you interact with Gemma, she starts telling the hunter about a little girl who “feels she has to solve all the problems alone.”
It’s clear that Gemma is drawing a parallel between herself and this imaginary little girl. She acknowledges that she used to be “a lot like”. Gemma continues that she left her home a long time ago and the people who thereafter took her in “seemed larger than life” (likely referring to the Guild and the hunters). She says that as she grew up, she realized that adults can be similarly lost as kids.
With that thought in mind, she harks back to when she initially left her village. Back then she thought they were clapping her on the back and saying “Fly far, lil’un.” Yet, now she feels differently about that moment. She instead thinks they were telling her:
“It’s your turn now. What do you choose to protect?”
The second instance where we see Gemma step up is when the Everforge is repaired and the ensuing disaster spills over. The ancient machinery is out of control and Ajarakans are appearing right in the village adding to the chaos. As the villagers of the Oilwell Basin fall in despair, Gemma stands tall and riles them up. Instead of wallowing in despair, she charges everyone present to think what they can do to fix it. Her actions lead to suggestions on how to quell the fire. She takes Maki along with her to help the villagers out.

Once you have defeated the Black Flame and everything returns to normal, Maki will go up to Gemma and thank her for yelling the courage right back into her. When Maki says that Gemma saved the day, the Smithy quips:
“I think you can’t get a finished product without all the components coming together, right?”
MHWilds Gemma: Quests and Other Interactions
Gemma’s Smithy services include forging/upgrading weapons/armor, giving you access to mantles, and occasionally providing you with materials.
Gemma’s quests include High-Quality Materials (rewarding Advanced Armor Spheres) and Smithy’s Seal of Quality (rewarding Pitfall Traps and Shock Traps).
Where To Find Gemma in MHWilds?
Gemma can be found in the base camps of Windward Plains, Scarlet Forest, Oilwell Basin, Iceshard Cliffs, Ruins of Wyvria, and Suja.

- Gemma is Little Miss Forge, the blacksmith from Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. This was previously speculated by the community upon her reveal but the bits and pieces of her we hear in the game more or less cements the backstory.
