Learn about whether Dragon Age: The Veilguard is available on PS4 or if it’s exclusive to current generation consoles and PC.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is arguably one of, if not the most anticipated, releases of 2024. As such, it’s natural for many fans to wonder whether the game is coming to PS4 (and even Xbox One). Unfortunately, The Veilguard is developed as a current-gen exclusive title, i.e., the game is built specifically for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PCs. As of writing this article, publisher EA, and developer Bioware have not mentioned any plans to release the game to the previous generation of consoles, i.e., PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard marks Bioware’s return to the iconic Dragon Age franchise after more than a decade. The last mainline Dragon Age title, Dragon Age: Inquisition, was released back in 2014. Since then, Bioware has had a rocky few years, with their later releases like Mass Effect Andromeda and Anthem, both being poorly received by players and critics alike. However, with The Veilguard, Bioware promises to return to its roots and deliver a unique RPG experience.
In order to do so, the studio is leveraging the capabilities of current-gen systems for the most immersive gameplay experience. Here’s everything you need to know about Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s release platforms and why it’s skipping the previous generation consoles.
Why Is Dragon Age: The Veilguard Not Releasing on PS4?
The long and short of why Dragon Age: The Veilguard isn’t coming to PS4 is the game’s engine. The Veilguard is developed using the same iteration of the Frostbite engine. Games like last year’s phenomenal Dead Space, Need for Speed Unbound, and even some of the recent EA Sports titles are built using the Frostbite engine. Frostbite was initially developed by DICE specifically for the Battlefield series. However, over the last few years, DICE’s engine has been modified to support various other titles, not just limited to the FPS genre.
The most recent iteration of Frostbite, which powers games like NFS Unbound and Dead Space, offers features that can only work on the current-gen hardware. The latest iteration of the Frostbite engine supports advanced GI (global illumination), faster rendering speed, and also ray tracing. And Bioware’s upcoming title comes with support for all these features and more.
Naturally, features like faster rendering and ray tracing aren’t something that’s possible on a PS4 (or even the PS4 Pro). While the PS4 is still quite a capable console, it is incredibly dated. The previous generation consoles are extremely limited when it comes to storage bandwidth, CPU resources, and VRAM. Going by the PC system requirements for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, even the minimum specifications for the game far surpass the PS4’s specifications. It’s no wonder why Bioware decided to make the game current-gen exclusive.
Will Dragon Age: The Veilguard Be Released on PS4?
While the chances are incredibly slim, owing to the game’s engine, there’s still a possibility that The Veilguard might make its way to PS4 in the future. This is simply due to the fact that EA recently released a PS4/Xbox One version of Star Wars Jedi Survivor. Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi Survivor was released last year, exclusively for the current-gen consoles. However, the game was recently ported to previous generation consoles, albeit with some major cutbacks. It should be noted that Star Wars Jedi Survivor is built using Unreal Engine 4, which is much more scalable than Frostbite.
Given that both Dead Space and Need for Speed Unbound are yet to get a PS4 release, Dragon Age: The Veilguard isn’t releasing on the system anytime soon. For the time being, the only way to play The Veilguard is via any of the current-gen systems.
