The Pros of Using a Mace in Minecraft

Let’s start with the advantages you can get and what unique aspects the mace has in Minecraft.

Scaling Umlimtied Damage

One of the most talked-about abilities of the mace is its infinite damage scaling when falling. The longer you fall, the more damage you can deal with your attack. The calculation is a bit complicated, but the basics are that it adds 4 points of damage for the first 3 blocks of your fall, 2 additional points for the next 5 blocks, and 1 extra point for every block fallen beyond that.

You can already see what people will be doing with this weapon. With the right calculations and contraptions, you can potentially one-shot any mob in the game, even the bosses. But what about fall damage? You don’t take fall damage if you can land a hit with a mace while falling. It’s a high-risk, high-reward mechanic as you will most likely die if you miss your shot.

Unique New Enchantments

As if the mace is not strong enough with its damage scaling, it also has a few enchantments to further boost its capabilities:

  • Breach: Reduces the effectiveness of a target’s armor.
  • Density: Increases the damage dealt per fallen block.
  • Wind Burst: Emites a Wind Burst upon hitting an enemy (and the attacker bounces forward).

First, let’s talk about Breach. This is mostly useful in PvP servers where people will have the best armor sets available. It’s a huge help as you can only go so far with the damage increased by falling. If you have Breach V, you can ignore around 60% of the enemy’s overall armor.

The next enhancement is Density. This further increases the damage you deal through falling. It makes the mace’s unique mechanic even more powerful. This is useful in PvE, where you don’t have enough time to go as high as you can for massive one-shot damage.

Lastly, Wind Burst is a mobility effect that’s useful for quick escapes or if you want to go for another hit and reposition. It can be a bit confusing at first because it displaces you by dashing forward. Once you are used to it, it’s a fun little mechanic.

The Cons of Using a Mace in Minecraft

Here are a few cons  that you need to take note of if you want to craft a mace in Minecraft:

Very Situational Weapon

The mace’s special effect is very situational as you need to be falling multiple blocks in order for it to make an impact in combat. Most of the time, you won’t have the luxury of finding high ground unless you already have the Elytra. Even if you have the Elytra, the mace is practically a regular but very slow weapon in caves where the ceiling is too low.

Rare Crafting Material

One of the crafting recipes for the mace is the heavy core. This item can be found in ominous vaults in the Trial Chambers. The problem is that it is a very rare item, so you will need to keep farming the Trial Chambers in hopes of getting one. Furthermore, you better have the Mending enchantment, or you risk breaking your mace and having to farm more heavy cores.

Hard to Master

The mace is hard to use due to its very slow attack speed and unique ability. Its main playstyle is to fall enough blocks for the extra damage. You need to time your attacks carefully. If you’re not doing this, you are better off using a sword or axe.

Is the Miencraft Mace Worth Using?

If you are just starting out in your world, it’s not worth it. The mace is a situational weapon, useful only in specific scenarios rather than as an all-purpose tool. Despite its intriguing infinite damage scaling mechanic when falling, it is far from overpowered. The challenge of setting up situations where the mace’s full potential can be utilized is significant. You need to fall high enough while timing your attack perfectly. This balances out its impressive damage capabilities.

Additionally, the mace lacks versatility compared to other weapons like swords or axes, which are better suited for a variety of combat situations. While it can be fun to use in creative strategies, the mace is more of a niche weapon than a must-have in your arsenal.

However, it is a fun weapon to use. It forces you to strategize your next attack due to its slow attack speed. Additionally, it challenges you to be creative in how you utilize its special ability.
