Resource scavenging and building are a big part of your Minecraft gameplay loop. As a result, you’re often out on a quest to find these resources in the game’s massive, procedurally generated world. Usually, you get lost in the wilds, either due to a mob sending you on a run or an item from the darkest corner of the map calling you towards it. Regardless, you’re lost, and now it’s time to find your way back. This is where the compass comes in clutch.

The compass in Minecraft points you toward the World Spawn, the first location the game loads you in. This helps you navigate your way around the map with ease, with no worries of getting lost. If you don’t know how to find or make a compass, our guide has you covered. In this guide, we shall go over how to find and make a compass in Minecraft.

How To Find a Compass

Compasses can be found in the wild while exploring and are stored within chests. You can find the generated loot chests in the following locations:

  • Ancient City: Inside a chest within the location. The chest holds a 16.1 percent drop rate.
  • Shipwreck: In the Map Chest. This chest holds a 7.7 percent drop rate.
  • Stronghold: In the Library Chest, which holds a 10.9 percent drop rate.
  • Trial Chambers: Inside the Intersectional Barrel, which holds a 5.9 percent drop rate.
  • Village: In the Cartographer’s Chest with a drop rate of 26.3 percent. This chest is your best bet to find the Compass.

If your search for a compass inside the generated chests bears no fruit, worry not. You can make a compass by crafting it. You require the following items to craft a compass in Minecraft:

  • 4x Iron Ingots: You can use 4x Iron Ore at the Furnace to obtain the Iron Ingots you need.
  • Redstone Dust: You get the Redstone Dust by mining Redstone Ores. Alternatively, you can purchase the Redstone Dust from the cleric villagers in exchange for emeralds.

Once you have the items, it’s time to get crafting. Head to the crafting table and interact with it to bring up the crafting grid. Place the Redstone Dust at the center and place the four Iron Ingots around it. This will give you the Compass.
