If you have an item with unwanted enchantments, here’s a comprehensive guide on how to remove them without destroying the item in Minecraft.

There are times when you get random enchantments from your equipment that you want to remove in Minecraft. The enchantment system can be a bit annoying and gives you a random set of effects that you don’t necessarily need. This is why it is good to know how you can get rid of these enchantments without having to discard your valuable equipment. This way, you won’t be losing on too many resources that you worked so hard to obtain.
Let’s dive deep into how you can remove enchantments in Minecraft and what are the pros and cons of doing it.
How to Easily Remove Enchantments in Minecraft

You can remove enchantments from any equipment, whether it be armor, weapons, or tools, through the grindstone in Minecraft. However, keep in mind that it will remove all enchantments on a gear, including those you will likely want to keep. Additionally, you can also repair items placed on the grindstone on top of removing their enchantments.
How to Craft Grindstone to Remove Enchantments
To craft a grindstone you will need the following materials:
- Wooden Planks 2x
- Stick 2x
- Stone Slab 1x
Wooden Planks and Sticks

Wooden planks and sticks can be easily acquired from logs.
Stone Slab

The stone slab is a bit more time-consuming to obtain. First, you’ll need to mine cobblestone, which is commonly found underground or on the surface of rocky terrain. Cobblestone alone won’t work for the grindstone; you must first smelt it in a furnace to convert it into regular stone. Once you have three stone blocks, place them in a horizontal row on a crafting table to create stone slabs.
Alternatively, if you have a pickaxe with the Silk Touch enchantment, you can directly mine stone without breaking it into cobblestone, saving you the smelting step.
Once you have the materials, place the stone in the middle of the crafting grid and add the sticks beside it. Below the sticks, place the two wooden planks. You can use the image below as a reference to craft a grindstone in Minecraft.

Keep in mind that the grindstone is also one of the job blocks that villagers might claim to get into the weaponsmith profession. If you don’t want this to happen, make sure it is out of reach or inaccessible from any NPC in the game. Fortunately, the grindstone is quite a unique block as it can be placed horizontally or vertically.
What Is the Use of Grindstone in Minecraft?

There are two uses for the grindstone. One is for removing enchantments, and the other is for repairing equipment.
Removing Enchantment
Placing an item in the upper slot will remove all the enchantments on that item if there are any. Otherwise, nothing happens. Removing the enchantments of an item will yield a small amount of experience based on the number of enchantments removed and their respective levels.
Repairing Items
Aside from the anvil, you can also use the grindstone to repair items. Simply place the two of the same type of item in the two input slots. However, keep in mind that it will also remove all the enchantments if there are any.
