Everything you need to know about the Guardians in Monster Hunter Wilds, their origin, abilities, ties to the Keepers, and more.

The Guardians in Monster Hunter Wilds are an enigma, something that might’ve caught many returning players off guard. While technically, these are new species of monsters, they’re also near-perfect replicas of the ones that already exist in the series.
The Guardians are also heavily tied into the game’s main story as well as the Keepers. Although during the very first encounter with the Keepers in the Ruins of Wyveria, the game tries to explain the concept of Guardians, it doesn’t really do a great job of doing so. There are still several questions that have been left unanswered. What was the real purpose of the Guardians in Wyveria? Who built these Constructs, and why?
These are all questions that many players might’ve had upon finishing the Low Rank main story. Unfortunately, in High Rank, the game completely ditches the topic of Guardians due to the introduction of the Frenzy Virus. Thankfully, there are still some hints in the game that can help us figure out the true nature of the Guardians. Here’s everything you need to know about the Guardians in Monster Hunter Wilds.
What Are the Guardians in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Guardians fall under the classification – Construct. Essentially, these creatures are artificially constructed monsters based on existing species. Unlike the natural variant of these creatures, the Guardian variants don’t need to sustain themselves or even reproduce. Instead, these creatures live endlessly, granted they continue to consume Wylk.
Given that Wylk is plentiful in the Ruins of Wyveria, the Guardians are mostly relegated to the particular locale. In Monster Hunter Wilds, we saw evidence of Guardians of both existing as well as extinct species. Guardian Rathalos, Guardian Doshaguma, Guardian Fulgar Anjanath, and Guardian Ebony Odogaron are Constructs of existing species.
However, there’s an outlier, i.e., Guardian Arkveld, which is based on a long-extinct species. There’s also another Guardian, Zoh Shia, which isn’t a replica of any single existing monster. Instead, Zoh Shia is an attempt at creating the “Equal Dragon Weapon,” rivaling the power of Elder Dragons, including Fatalis. Although Guardians were built for the sole purpose of serving the people of Wyveria, they eventually ended up being the reason for the collapse of their civilization.
This, alongside the retaliation of Guardian Arkveld, suggests that much like the natural species, Guardians also have the concept of “free will,” albeit heavily suppressed. While these are creatures that were conceived artificially, they still have a will to live and even try to replicate the nature of their natural counterparts.
In the game, we saw Guardian Arkveld killing and consuming other monsters to try and sustain itself, despite being a Construct. This clearly shows that Guardians have a sense of self-preservation. Additionally, something similar is seen in the case of Guardian Ebony Odogaron, which roams around Wyveria, occasionally hunting Small Monsters.
Why Were the Guardians Created?

The Guardians were created by the ancient civilization that once inhabited Wyveria. The creation of these artificial creatures was fueled by the Dragontorch and the Wyvern Milk (Wylk). Guardians were essentially created as a deterrent as well as a weapon against other Monsters that posed a threat to Wyveria’s civilization.
The precise reason for the creation of Guardians is yet unclear. However, in High Rank, we did get some hints that can be pieced together as a reason that might’ve led Wyveria to create the Guardians. Toward the tail end of High Rank’s main story, we see the Demi Elder, Gore Magala making a return from the past games.
Gore Magala has been one of the driving forces behind the Frenzy Virus and its spread across the Forbidden Lands. Not only that, but in past games, especially Monster Hunter 4, Gore Magala is depicted as a force that’s capable of destabilizing entire ecosystems. Perhaps, Guardians were created by Wyverians to help them against Gore Magala. Or perhaps something even more powerful, i.e., Shagaru Magala. After all, Zoh Shia, the most powerful Guardian, uses the same skeleton as Gore and Shagaru Magala.
While it’s a good theory, it’s still just that, a theory, a speculation. Hopefully, we will get more details on the Guardians in the upcoming title updates for Monster Hunter Wilds.
