Monster Hunter Wilds has an elaborate multiplayer system where you can not only play with friends, but with other players in the same lobby as well. Some of the late-game MR hunts like Arkveld can be very challenging, and you might want to do them with your friends to have an easier time. There are multiple ways to get multiplayer mode to work in Monster Hunter Wilds, especially because the game has crossplay enabled.

In this guide, we will explain the Monster Hunter Wilds Multiplayer mode in detail. We will explain private lobbies, link parties, and all other terms that you need to know in order to become a top tier hunter.

Note: The contents of this article are based on the Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta Tests. We will update this with information from the actual game if any of these features change.

How Does Multiplayer Work in Monster Hunter Wilds?

You can access multiplayer via two methods primarily in Monster Hunter Wilds:

  • Public Lobbies
  • Private Lobbies

As the name suggests, these lobbies allow you to customize whom you want in your multiplayer sessions. Each of these has a multitude of options as well, so here are the detailed explanations you need.

Public Lobbies in Monster Hunter Wilds

When you join a multiplayer game in Monster Hunter Wilds, you are automatically put into a Public Lobby unless you manually change it from the title screen while loading. In a Public Lobby, all players can see each other in and around the base. You can also join quests with other members in your lobby, or post quests for them. Here is how you can post or join a quest in a Public Lobby:

  • Locate Alma in your base and talk to her.
  • Click on Post/Join a Quest.
  • You can post or join quests for Lobby Members, or for Link Members.
  • Select the quest, and post it. If someone has posted a quest, you will be able to see it there.

Public lobbies in Monster Hunter Wilds also has a SOS Flare Quests in multiplayer modes. You will be able to see all SOS Flare quests under the same menu as well.

Link Party is like a private group within a Public Lobby in Monster Hunter Wilds. If you have a small group of friends and you want to do hunts with them without creating a Private Lobby, then Link Party is your savior. When you invite a friend to your game, the two of you are automatically put in a Link Lobby in Monster Hunter Wilds.

The Link Party is similar to Public Lobbies in Monster Hunter Wilds multiplayer, but you can post quests separately here. These quests, called Link Member Quests, are only available to members in your Link Party. That said, a Link Party only allows you to post and join quests. You cannot see each other on the world, or take part in open-world monster hunts. That is where Environment Link comes in.

When you invite a friend to your Link Party, you will also see the option to invite your friend to an Environment Link. This can be done directly from the main invite menu, or you can also do it after a friend is already in your Link Party.

In the Environment Link multiplayer mode in Monster Hunter Wilds, you can see each linked member on the map. Here, you can go and take on any open-world hunt that is available and do it together. However, you cannot post or accept Link Member quests in this mode.

Here is a table with the basic difference between Link Party and Environment Link Party in Monster Hunter Wilds multiplayer:

Private Lobbies in Monster Hunter Wilds

As the name suggests, Private Lobbies are restricted multiplayer sessions in Monster Hunter Wilds, where you can choose whom to invite. These can be your friends from Steam or any other platform, or also in-game Hunters whom you have added.

Here is how you can create a Private Lobby in Monster Hunter Wilds:

  • Launch the game, and select the Save File that you want to load.
  • In the Select Lobby section, click on Private Lobby.
  • Wait for a while as the game servers create a new lobby for you.

Once you are in the lobby, you can invite your friends from the main menu. When you invite your friends to a Private Lobby, you are automatically put in a Link Party again. If you want to do open-world hunts together, you need to invite your friends to the Environment Link using the same method as mentioned above.

Each lobby (both public and private) has a Lobby ID, and players can also join your lobby via that code. A Private Lobby can have at most 16 players in it (as of the Open Beta Test 2).
