Sony recently released a blog post addressing one of the major controversies associated with PlayStation’s PC ports – the PSN login requirement. Since the release of Helldivers 2 last year, Sony has made a PSN login mandatory for all its PC ports. In fact, a PSN login was even made mandatory for purely single-player games, without any multiplayer component.

The primary pitch for the PSN integration was its necessity for crossplay. However, single-player games requiring a mandatory PSN login did not make any sense for PC players. Furthermore, due to the forced PSN integration, some of the later PlayStation PC ports weren’t made available for purchase in certain regions (without official PSN support).

As such, a huge chunk of PC players were never able to access those PlayStation titles using platforms like Steam and Epic Games Store. However, starting January 30, 2025, PSN login will no longer be a mandatory requirement for PlayStation’s PC ports. Here’s everything you need to know about PlayStation’s latest update regarding its PC releases.

PlayStation (PSN) Account for PC Ports Are Now Optional With Content Incentives

From January 30, 2025, the PSN account login for PlayStation’s PC ports is completely optional. Sony has confirmed that the upcoming PC ports, i.e., Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, won’t require a mandatory PSN login. Although a PSN login did not require PC players to install an additional DRM, akin to Ubisoft Connect or EA App, it did act as an artificial barrier between players and the game they bought. Furthermore, due to the mandatory PSN account requirement, some of the recent PlayStation PC ports weren’t even available to purchase in several regions across the globe. This, inevitably, ended up making a huge dent in Sony’s overall profit margin on these PC ports.

As such, it’s no surprise that Sony made PSN optional, albeit after major backlash from PC players. Although logging into a PSN account (or creating a new one) hardly takes any time, it was ultimately a pointless step and one that had nothing to offer in terms of value. Furthermore, for the initial wave of PlayStation PC ports, a PSN account was never a mandatory requirement. It was a completely optional step that players could partake in if they so desired. However, opting out of it did not have any major repercussions on the gameplay experience.

That is once again going to be the case for all future PlayStation PC titles. A PSN login is now optional for all upcoming PlayStation PC ports. However, if players do choose to log in using their existing PlayStation accounts, they can reap various benefits. Sony has given a list of content incentives that players can avail in their games by logging in using their PSN accounts.

PSN Login Content Incentives for PC Games

Here’s the list of games and the incentives:

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2Early unlock suits – The Spider-Man 2099 Black Suit and the Miles Morales 2099 Suit
God of War RagnarokAccess to the Armor of the Black Bear set for Kratos (previously only accessible in a New Game+ run) and a resource bundle (500 Hacksilver and 250 XP)
The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered+50 points to activate bonus features and unlock extras, and Jordan’s Jacket from Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet as a skin for Ellie
Horizon Zero Dawn RemasteredAccess to Nora Valiant outfit

It should be noted that the content available as part of the PSN login incentive isn’t exclusive. Instead, all these items (and bonuses) can be obtained in-game, even if you don’t log in using a PSN account. The only advantage of using a PSN login is that you will get early access to said content.
