Rainbow Six Siege is a fairly complicated game. It puts you into various 5v5 scenarios across different maps, involving a wide array of operators. The different permutations and combinations of operators and maps make the game quite intimidating, and this is further complicated by the variety of game modes available.

With four multiplayer game modes to choose from, each with its own unique map pools and match rules, you may feel lost if you are a new player. In this guide, we shall go over all the multiplayer game modes in Rainbow Six Siege and explain them in detail.

Quick Match

The first and fastest mode in the game is Quick Match. This game mode features the widest selection of maps. In addition to the map variety, the matches are short and fast-paced, with the preparation phase cut in half, and all walls reinforced with pre-made rotates. The focus of this mode is to throw you into the action right away, wasting very little time. You can filter through Bomb, Secure Area, and Hostage match types in the Quick Match settings. Playing Quick Matches rewards you with renown and XP.

Standard Mode

The Standard game mode acts as a precursor to Ranked. This mode lets you pick and play maps from both the Quick Match and Ranked map pools. Matches follow a best-of-six format, with a best-of-one overtime. You play both attack and defense, with teams switching sides at Round 4. Playing Standard Matches rewards you with renown and XP. There’s no elo on the line, so the matches are lower stakes—but there is a penalty for abandoning them.

Ranked and Siege Cup

Unlocked at Level 50, Ranked is the competitive game mode in Siege. You start at the lowest possible elo, Copper 5, and climb the ranks by winning matches. You’re matched against players of similar rank, ensuring fair competition (for the most part).

The rules in this mode are the same as those in Standard Matches, with the only difference being that overtime is a best-of-three instead of best-of-one. Playing Ranked matches rewards you with renown and XP. Winning or losing affects your elo and rank. If you abandon a match midway, you’re penalized and temporarily banned from the mode. If you get disconnected due to an internet issue, you have until the end of the match to rejoin.

The Siege Cup is a monthly tournament where you must register and compete against other teams. These tournaments are region-specific and require registration in teams of five, with all members on the same regional server.

You can toggle Arcade Mode settings to enable or disable specific match types. Arcade Mode matches have no stakes, and you can drop in and out without penalty. Playing these matches rewards you with renown and XP.
