The PvP Weapon Dominating in Destiny 2

Destiny 2 PvP is a fast-paced activity pitting guardians against guardians in an arena-style competitive mode. As with most competitive modes, there is an ever-shifting sandbox that can change drastically based on the balancing changes by the developers. However, there are usually outliers that consistently perform well even after nerfs and buffs across the game. Submachine guns (SMGs), specifically the Unending Tempest, are one of these outliers. It has incredible stats, is easy to obtain, and performs well when compared to other weapons, in and out of its weapon archetype.

Unending Tempest Usage
Both Trials Report and Destiny Tracker showcase high usage numbers of Unending Tempest

The Unending Tempest is a Stasis SMG that has become a dominant force in Destiny 2’s PvP because of its fast time-to-kill (TTK). The state of PvP in Destiny 2 is constant pressure and speed. With weapons and subclasses giving high levels of fast movement, it’s very important to keep pace. Weapons and subclasses that allow for faster levels of gameplay are often prioritized over slower counterparts.

Since Undending Tempest is an SMG, it encourages close-range engagement due to its shorter damage range. Also, it’s one of the easier-to-obtain SMGs in the game making it a great choice for any aspiring PvP player to get in their arsenal. Recently, zoom and range got major adjustments towards how they interact leading to massive changes in weapons that were otherwise considered weak.

Why the Unending Tempest is Dominating PvP

Destiny 2 Unending Tempest

With its high rate of fire, forgiving recoil, and powerful perks, The Unending Tempest can quickly melt down opponents at close range. The Unending Tempest is hands down one of the best SMGs currently in the game. It has a host of great PvP perks to fit any basic or niche PvP loadout. While being a precision frame, having fantastic recoil, and great stability allow the weapon to land shots easily.

It also has a very large perk pool with a wide selection of desirable perks. When compared to other similar frame SMGs, The Unending Tempest is the second highest as far as overall stats, only falling slightly short of Shayura’s Wrath which isn’t currently obtainable. The Immortal, a powerhouse of an SMG, which has had the PvP meta in a chokehold for nearly a year doesn’t even stand up against the Unending Tempest in the stat department.

Unending Tempest Features in Destiny 2:

  • Element: Stasis
  • Frame: Precision Frame
  • Rounds Per Minute: 600 RPM
  • Magazine: 27 Rounds
  • Desired Perks: Dynamic Sway Reduction, Enlightened Action, Target Lock, Cascade Point

The Unending Tempest is a powerful SMG with a healthy amount of base stats, a wide selection of perks, and a consistent frame allowing even beginner players to compete. Furthermore, It’s a versatile weapon that can be used in a variety of situations, so it’s guaranteed to secure some kills.

Drawbacks of the Unending Tempest

Although the Unending Tempest is an incredibly powerful weapon, it does have a few drawbacks. For example, its perk pool being massive allows for a wide selection and customizability towards different players and builds. However, this causes the weapon to be even more RNG-based to get the exact roll you want. Another disadvantage is to obtain the weapon, you have to play PvP with weaker options until you get your desired roll. If these negatives are too much to manage, there are a few alternatives available depending on your needs. SMGs like the Showrunner and Synchronic Roulette are some of these alternatives with the Ammit AR2 auto rifle being a great option if you want a bit more range.

How to Use Unending Tempest in Destiny 2 PvP

Utilizing SMGs like the Unending Tempest demands an aggressive playstyle that involves maneuvering around opponents and engaging and disengaging from combat within the weapon’s effective range.

The Unending Tempest should be used with a pushing playstyle. Since it has one of the shortest ranges of primary weapons, it’s incredibly important to make sure you are closing the gap on opponents as quickly as possible. Movement exotics like ST0MP-EE5, Transverse Steps, and Dunemarchers are amazing with this playstyle. Subclasses like Arc and Strand provide great movement buffs allowing you to close any range gaps easily. Sliding around corners, pushing close-range fire lanes or lanes with a lot of covers, and only engaging in your weapon’s damage range are all tips to help you win your fights. Pairing your Unending Tempest with a shotgun or a sniper can complete round out your PvP loadout. Weapons like SMGs are incredibly forgiving, with medium-sized magazines and high accuracy.
