Combo refers to a system in Dragon Age: The Veilgaurd where Rook’s ability and the selected companion’s ability combined to apply and detonate an additional effect on the target to maximize the damage. These ability detonations synergize that are an easy way to boost outgoing damage from the attacks you and your teammates will already be flinging out. Utilizing the best combo in combat is crucial while in a boss fight. In this guide, we’ll discuss how combo mechanics work and the top 10 best combos to try.

How combo mechanics work in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Combo in Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a two-step process that includes a primer attack and a detonator attack on the same target. The companions have a couple of more effective abilities when paired with Rook’s. Some skills include applying and detonating the effects, Sundered, Weakened, and Overwhelmed. Sundered makes the target take more damage overall, weakened decreases enemies damage output, and Overwhelmed allows the target to take more stagger damage in combat. However, some enemies are immune to disabling attacks but are immune to combos based on that immunity.

Applying an effect on an enemy means primes the target for an explosion and detonating an effect creates an explosion that deals additional damage. The explosion only deals damage to the target but you can upgrade your Companions’ skills to make it more effective and to deal area damage as well. The prime effects work differently depending on the effect that you applied but detonating an ability creates the same explosion and that combo naturally deals increased damage and usually also has some other effects as well. For example, Lucanis can use Eviscerate to detonate the combo and strike the whole group.

Ability Wheel and Skill combos

Overwhelm Combo – Top 10 Best Combos in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Use the ability wheel to mark the skills (combo opportunity) with arrows and a flag that can perform a prime-detonate combo. However, the order of abilities that you select plays an important role here. Pick the applying ability first and then choose the detonator ability later. If the Shock is applied to Weakened enemies, then the combo will not work but if Weakened is inflicted on Shocked enemies then only the combo works. The damage bonus is based on the detonator ability, not on the primer ability.

You can see your primer ability on your ability shortcuts indicated by the circular symbol above the ability. After you prime the target with one of those, you can detonate it with any abilities that show a spiky highlighted orange symbol above them instead. You can also apply an enchantment to gear or unlock some skills that improve the power of detonations. Deeper into the game or on higher difficulties you might want to leave those negative status effects lingering on the target for as long as possible to pop them with a detonation right before they expire.

Rook has a total of eight to nine abilities that can either apply or detonate the effect based on the class that you choose during character creation in the game. However, your selected companion will have two each. Bring the ability wheel up and see potential combos that you can combo together with your allies and then they can have like massive super strong effect and can actually change the way fights unfold as well. Below are all the Combos that you can use while facing any boss or any normal enemy.
