The Monster Hunter series, despite its mainstream appeal, is filled with mechanics that can be quite intimidating for newcomers. However, with every new entry, Capcom does try their best to streamline the series’ core mechanics.

Whether it be the introduction of new combat tools, i.e., Slinger or the Wirebugs, or making crafting and upgrading gear easier, every new Monster Hunter game offers options that simplify the series’ underlying mechanics. And the upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds is no exception to this rule. In fact, the game comes with some really cool new systems that fundamentally change the core “monster-hunting experience” as veterans of the series might know it.

One such major change is to the weapon skills system. Although Capcom did try to experiment with weapon skills in Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak, they seem to have nearly perfected it with their upcoming title. Here’s everything you need to know about weapon skills in Monster Hunter Wilds.

What Are Weapon Skills in Monster Hunter Wilds?

In Monster Hunter games, skills play a vital role in build crafting. Skills are essentially the aspects that you get to tweak your build for in these games. Unlike other traditional RPGs, Monster Hunter games don’t feature a “skill tree.” Instead, skills are tied to gear and craftable accessories called Decorations.

Every armor piece comes with these Decoration Slots, where you can add skill-specific decorations. Furthermore, armor pieces also come with pre-baked skills that serve as the base of your build. In past Monster Hunter games, skills were often tied to armor pieces. Weapons only contributed to the build’s overall DPS and the elemental affinity.

However, with Monster Hunter Rise, Capcom added Decoration Slots to weapons. This was further expanded upon in the Sunbreak expansion, where players can add Rampage Skills to weapons. This basically allowed players to bind skills not only to their armor but also to their weapons. This comes in very handy when you want to keep weapon-specific skills like Partbreaker (Slugger) or Charger (Focus) to weapons. And now with Monster Hunter Wilds, this feature is further improved upon. Essentially, in Monster Hunter Wilds, every weapon comes with not only dedicated Decoration Slots but also skills.

Furthermore, Capcom has confirmed that the weapon skills are weapon-specific. Meaning, you won’t see weapons tied to skills like Speed Eating or Recovery. This makes it easy to synergize weapons with specific skills without having to commit to a particular armor piece. Additionally, this also opens up slots for additional armor skills, giving more headroom for build customization.

Weapon skills have a direct impact on combat efficiency in Monster Hunter. Skills like Attack, Critical Eye, Critical Element, Stamina Thief, and Slugger are essential for melee builds. In Monster Hunter Wilds, these skills are directly tied to weapons.

There are also passive skills like Partbreaker, Maximum Might, Weakness Exploit, etc., that are tied to weapons and play vital roles in combat. Skills essentially determine how much raw/elemental damage your build is going to deal. Furthermore, with skills like Slugger, Partbreaker, and Weakness Exploit, you can further boost your damage output. All in all, skills are an essential part of Monster Hunter’s combat system.
