In Baldur’s Gate 3, the Max level is 12, meaning above that, even if you keep playing, you won’t get any additional bonuses or levels. This number may be raised with new DLCs or updates in the future. Larian Studios originally planned to limit characters to level 10. However, the game would miss on too many fantastic spells so in the full and final version of Baldur’s Gate 3 the max level cap is 12.
We originally planned for Level 10 to be the highest character level in the game… too many rad high-level spells would have been left just out of reach had we done so.

Leveling in Baldur’s Gate 3 is slow but rewarding. You gain experience and levels just by playing, as almost anything can reward you with XP. While some methods offer more experience than others, the best approach is to play at your own pace, explore, and focus on activities that give you the most satisfaction, especially if it’s your first playthrough.
Combat is a good way to increase your level and in BG3 you’ll find an opportunity to fight almost everywhere. The game is designed to give you complete freedom in what you want to do, there are no “immortal characters”. So if you don’t like someone simply you can kill them or skip their mission. However, you must reckon with the consequences of your choices and actions.

- Complete Quests and Missions
- Explore the world, and discover new areas to each time gain a small amount of experience
- Engage in Combat, the more challenging opponents, the more XP
- Engage in every conversation to not miss out on any good amount of experience or mission
- Kill every possible enemy
- Pass skill checks
- Talk to your companions they may have quests or advice for you that may result in extra XP
