While looking for the lab of Thayian necromancer Ilyn Toth in Act 1 of Baldur’s Gate 3, you will stumble across an Ornate Mirror. It guards the entrance to his secret laboratory. This magical mirror is capable of speech and asks questions that you have to answer correctly.

In this guide, we shall go over how you should deal with the mirror if you wish to reach the secret laboratory.

How to Handle the Mirror in Baldur’s Gate 3

The mirror guarding Ilyn Toth’s secret laboratory will only allow those close to him to pass through. It will test people through questions and then use magic attacks on anyone it deems as an intruder.

You have a few options as to how you can tackle this situation:

  • You can damage the mirror to break it and go through. Only 22 damage is sufficient to achieve this.
  • You can intimidate the mirror and pass a DC 15 skill check to have it let you through.
  • You could use a Dark Journal and pass a DC 15 Persuasion Check to persuade the mirror into believing that you are Ilyn Toth.
  • You can answer its questions.

Answer the Mirror’s Questions

You can simply answer the mirror’s questions in the order given below to enter the laboratory.

  • The Ornate mirror asks for your name to begin the conversation. It will not recognize the name when you mention it.
  • The mirror will then question if you are an ally of its master. Here is the answer you give – “Yes, an ally! I’m an ally of your master’s.” The mirror will then declare that only a true ally of Ilyn Toth may pass.
  • It will ask for your thoughts on the zulkir known as Szass Tam. Here, the correct answer is, “Szass Tam is a foul, wretched creature.”
  • The mirror will test you further and ask you what balsam ointments are used for. Here’s what you should answer – “I read a doctor’s journal – he used balsam to clean a wound.” If this option does not appear, read the healer’s log near the entrance ladder.
  • Lastly, the mirror will ask what you would choose to see on its surface. Here’s the answer you should give – “I’d look for whatever spell will rid me of this worm in my head.”

After this, the Ornate Mirror will say, “You seek to survive. You seek power.” It will welcome you to the laboratory. Pass through the mirror to enter the lab.
