Patch 8 of Baldur’s Gate 3 will bring many new sub-classes for each character type, which includes a new Bladesinging Wizard class.

Patch 8 is currently in a testing phase. However, many of the features it will bring have already been disclosed. The Bladesinging subclass is one of the many new subclasses that will be added in this patch. This new Bladesinging Wizard subclass merges quick swordplay with powerful wizardry. You get the abilities of a wizard, along with improved defensive techniques to survive any ambushes and fight up close if the situation calls for it.
There are a few reasons that make Bladesinging Wizards extremely powerful within Baldur’s Gate 3.
Why Are Bladesinging Wizards So Powerful in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Wizards in general are one of the best classes in the game. They have an extremely large pool of spells to choose from, and this gives them many options to use in any scenario. Their damage at long range is very high, and they are invaluable in any team.
Although the most common and classic weakness for Wizards has always been their lack of survivability. Wizards are most effective at long ranges. Conversely, if an enemy manages to get close, they are out of luck. Wizards are the most fragile of all the classes, and this becomes all the more apparent at close range.
However, Bladesinging Wizards manage to make up for this greatest weakness of theirs. This is thanks to their special Bladesong feature. Bladesong allows Wizards to add their proficiency bonus to their armor class. It also increases their movement speed by 10 ft.
This simple but powerful tool greatly boosts a Wizard’s survivability by making them much less likely to get hit. On top of this, their offensive options at melee range are also expanded by allowing them an extra attack and proficiency with a variety of weapons.
Song of Defence
The Bladesinging Wizard’s defense is further bolstered by their ability to reduce incoming damage by expending spell slots. They can reduce up to 5 points of damage per level of the slot expended. This further increases their endurance in battle and makes Wizards one of the toughest classes rather than the most fragile.
All of this extra defense comes at no cost to the Wizards normal ability to cast spells of all kinds. Thus, the Bladesinging Wizard becomes a veritable spell-slinging tank. For all of these reasons, Bladesinging Wizards will be a dominating force once Patch 8 is released.
Community Opinions on Bladesinging Wizard in Baldur’s Gate 3
An old discussion on Reddit was comparing the Eldritch Knight and the Bladesinging Wizard class. General opinions were that the Bladesinger would be the better option due to having all the abilities of a wizard, with some defensive options that will let the new subclass work well at close combat as well.
The defensive options of a Wizard Bladesinger nulls one of the Wizard’s most cliched weaknesses, i.e., being a squishy target. However, with the Bladesinging Wizard, this weakness is nullified to some extent, which lets a Wizard deal damage and take it as well.
These are the reasons why a Bladesinging Wizard will be able to dominate quite well in Baldur’s Gate 3.
