Magic is very commonly used by many classes in Baldur’s Gate 3. The uses of magic can range from simple utility spells that conjure water to offensive spells that cause an entire area to explode in a ball of fire. When it comes to offensive spells, there are many elements such as Fire, Lightning, Cold, Thunder, and Acid. One other more sinister form of magical damage is Necrotic damage.

Necrotic damage, as it sounds, is the power of death itself. It can deteriorate one’s vitality while constantly building up on them. Additionally, with the upcoming Patch 8 in 2025, Cleric will get the ability to choose the Death Domain subclass, which highly utilizes spells dealing Necrotic damage.

Here are some reasons why we think Necrotic damage is OP in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Many spells that deal Necrotic damage belong to the necromancy school, except a select few, such as the Halo of Spores used by the Circle of Spores Druid. Spells such as Bone Chill can be devastating due to the spell being able to prevent a target from healing. Combining this with spells like Harm and Vampiric Touch can lead to your target’s HP being reduced even more.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, when you go to Act 2 or beyond, you start to face many enemies who become easy to deal with if you use Necrotic damage. However, enemies such as constructs and the undead are resistant when it comes to taking Necrotic damage. Here’s where the upcoming cleric subclass shines.

The Death Domain Cleric primarily deals with necromancy spells through which you can grasp the very energy of death to your advantage. Moreover, one exclusive feature of this class can help you a lot if you wish to embrace the sinister energies. Inescapable Destruction is a passive that the Death Domain Cleric obtains upon reaching Level 6. With this passive, any spell that you cast ignores Necrotic damage resistance.

This means spells such as Spirit Guardian’s, which is one of the best AoE spells in the game, can now deal full 3d8 Necrotic damage to all enemies except those that have immunity. This single passive feature can now turn the already powerful Necrotic damage even more OP in Baldur’s Gate 3.
