Spells are easily the most powerful tool in your arsenal in Wuchang Fallen Feathers, perhaps even more so than your primary weapon. Unlike most souls-likes out there, Wuchang features a heavy emphasis on Spell-based combat, which is woven seamlessly with the melee systems. Furthermore, as you progress through the game, you will find multiple powerful Spells that vastly alter your playstyle and how you approach combat.

However, akin to most souls-likes that try to emulate FromSoftware’s games, Wuchang doesn’t explain all of its gameplay elements right away. One such under-explained system is “Spell switching.” Here’s everything you need to know about switching between spells in Wuchang Fallen Feathers and how to use this system efficiently during combat.

Before you can switch between different Spells, make sure you have more than one Spell equipped on Wuchang. The majority of the Spells are obtained after defeating major story bosses. However, there are other means of obtaining Spells as well. For instance, you can get Spells from elite enemies, as well as certain mini-bosses that are optional. Additionally, Spells can also be purchased from the vendors at Shu Sanctuary. That said, once you have Spells equipped, here’s how you can switch between them:

  • Make sure you have multiple Spells equipped (a maximum of 4 Spells can be equipped).
  • To switch between Spells, press and hold the Y or Triangle (Xbox or PS5) button on the controller.
  • Cast your desired Spell with RB (R1), LB (L1), or LT (L2).
  • You can also change the order of the default Spell by placing it at the start in the Inventory.

In Wuchang Fallen Feathers, Spells can be used without a “catalyst.” This means that you can cast spells right alongside your regular attacks. In fact, the game actively encourages a hybrid approach to combat where you’re using Spells regularly in conjunction with melee combos. Most of the Spells you obtain early in the game are offensive. However, there are a few that serve a passive purpose, offering buffs and even new combos, albeit for a brief moment. Furthermore, Spells can be cast infinitely, as long as you have your Skyborn Might meters charged.

Every Spell has a specific Skyborn Might requirement and can only be used if you have enough of that resource available to you. Thankfully, charging your Skyborn Might gauge is quite easy. That is, as long as you perform your melee combos and perfect dodges without getting hit. Additionally, there are also resources that allow you to fully or partially refill your Skyborn Might gauge.

Do note that before you can cast higher-level Spells, you will need to invest skill points into Skyborn Might to increase the number of charges you can hold. Thankfully, the majority of the skill tree is open to players right from the start. Additionally, you can also respec your skills any time, without any additional cost involved.
